SMETHPORT, PA – After piling up lead in the first half, the Smethport football team watched as their grip quickly and dramatically slipped away in the fourth quarter, with Kane pulling ahead in the Wolves’ 28-22 comeback win in the final minute of play.
Jonah Ganoe broke things open for the Hubbers early in the first quarter with a 46-yard touchdown. Kane then responded in a similar fashion, however, covering 44 yards on a carry from Evan Anderson. In the second, the Hubbers would tack on 14 unanswered points with quarterback Mason Swanson connecting with Ganoe for a 30-yard score before Ganoe broke out again for an 85-yard touchdown run.
While Kane would chip away at the deficit with seven points before the break, they still faced an eight-point gap that continued to stare back at them after a scoreless third quarter. Despite a lack of momentum, they found a spark with a ground-and-pound score from Anderson.
The Wolves and Hubbers then were deadlocked again and until the final minutes of the contest, the Hubbers looked poised to earn their second win of the season. However, Kane refused to give up. Bashing their way up the field with just two minutes left on the clock, the Wolves finally arrived on the goalline, where Eric Novosel covered three yards to tack on six points. Having a knotted scoreboard, Kane gave the ball to Isaiah Smith who broke the plain with 59 seconds left, giving the Wolves the comeback win.
Ganoe led the Hubbers with 219 yards on 27 touches and three scores while Swanson finished with 53 passing yards, completing seven of his 11 attempts downfield.
