ST. CATHARINES, ON — Seeing the Ironbacks for the second time in three days, the Olean Oilers were quickly routed above the border, being put out by Niagara in seven innings, 11-1.
The Oilers opened up strong, with Darek Staudt leading off with a double before rounding third and crossing home from an RBI-single from Thomas Bates. However, the early pair of hits amounted to half of Olean’s game total as they were continuously sent back to the dugout in short order for the remainder of the afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Ironbacks’ slow start, which amounted to just one run in the first three frames, broke open the action in the fourth. Back-to-back RBIs in that frame kickstarted 10 unanswered scores which ultimately carried them to a mercy-rule victory.
Staudt and Bates were one of three Oilers to end 1-for-3 in the loss, joined by Aidan Willard and followed by Cooper Tarlie, who both went 1-for-2. On the mound, Austin Miles took to the bump first, throwing for five frames and coming away with five strikeouts.
With just one game left in the regular season, Olean (19-18) returns home for their closer, facing the Niagara Falls Americans at Bradner Stadium at 4 p.m.
