DUNKIRK, NY — In an ultra-competitive CCAA Div. I, one run can make all the difference.
Unfortunately for the Allegany-Limestone baseball team — currently last in the league — it was that one run coming across in the bottom of the eighth inning that kept them from playing spoiler over league leaders Dunkirk.
The Gators were one strike away from wrapping up the bottom of the first extra inning of play on the road against the Marauders, but a single from Greg Orcutt was just enough to bring the lone baserunner, Josh Lemanski, across the plate solidifying a 7-6 loss for A-L.
And the loss will sting that much more for the Gators as they were one half inning away from a seven-inning win.
A-L managed to break the game open in the fifth inning after entering the frame facing a 2-1 deficit. Dunkirk managed to knot things back up just an inning later, but after taking the lead in the top of the seventh, all the visitors needed to do was shut their hosts down. However, they allowed another response before ultimately seeing their demise in extras.
Caleb Strade led the Gators, going 1-for-4 with three RBI. He also got the start on the mound and recorded nine strikeouts and four walks in 6.1 innings of work.
Vinny LaBella helped him out on the bats going 1-for-3 with two runs.

PORTVILLE, NY — The Portville softball team, despite out-hitting its opponents, fell victim to some late offense in its non-league affair against Fillmore.
The Panthers jumped out to a 3-1 lead after three frames, but unfortunately that was all the offense they could muster up on the night, unable to respond as the Eagles matched those three runs between the fifth and sixth innings, adding to the lone run they scored in the top of the first.
