ELLICOTTVILLE — Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Cattaraugus Master Gardeners will host “Cultivate the Garden — Cultivate Yourself,” a six-week introductory series on authentic Tai Chi and Qi Gong.
The outdoor classes will run Tuesday evenings from Sept. 1 through Oct. 6, from 6 to 7 p.m. at 28 Parkside Drive at the scenic Nannen Arboretum.
All proceeds will directly benefit the Cornell Master Gardener Program.
This unique series bridges the natural harmony of gardening with the internal balance of martial arts. Tai Chi and Qi Gong utilize slow, deliberate movements, deep breathing, and focused mindfulness to reduce stress, improve physical balance, and increase vital energy. No prior experience is necessary.
“Just as we tend to our gardens to help them flourish, we must also tend to our own physical and mental well-being,” said Shifu Steve Czajkowski for the CCE Cattaraugus Master Gardeners. “The Nannen Arboretum provides the perfect peaceful backdrop for participants to connect with nature while supporting vital community agricultural programming.”
Designed for adults of all ages and fitness levels, this series offers foundational movements, breathing methods, and lifelong wellness principles. Participants will explore:
- Fundamental Tai Chi and Qi Gong exercises
- Proper breathing, balance, and coordination
- Relaxation, stress reduction, and increased natural energy
- Improved posture, flexibility, and body awareness
- An introduction to feeling and cultivating Qi
Depending on enrollment and participant interest, continuing instruction may be offered following the completion of this introductory series.
Donations directly support local CCE Master Gardeners educational gardening programs, community outreach, environmental stewardship, and horticultural education throughout the region.
The suggested donation amount is $125 which includes a commemorative class t-shirt.
