WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Sherk sets the bar for Owls track and field; Port Allegany softball outduels Lady Owls

WEST MIFFLIN, PA – Competing in a field of over 50 teams, the Bradford boy’s track and field team were led by Fabian Sherk, who ended the day by breaking a 23-year-old record in the long jump, helping the Owls secure sixth overall in the Tristate Coaches Championship meet on Saturday.

Sherk’s jump 22-2.25 eclipsed the long-standing record of Shawn Colligan, who set the watermark back in 2003. Along with his work in the long jump, Sherk also placed third in the trip jump (44-6.25) and sixth as a part of the 400m relay team (44.27). Tyler Simmons, also a part of the 4×100 quartet, took third in the high jump (6-1) and eighth in the 100m (11.48) while Enzo Aiello placed fifth in the pole vault (14-0) and Logan Kohler took fourth in the 300m hurdles (39.99). 

Andrew Giordano posted a personal best throw in the shot put at 45-1, good for ninth place overall, also taking fifth in the javelin at 170-5. Mile Deprator also earned a new personal bets in the shot put at 41-6 for 14th while freshmen Ewan Bell earned a PR in the 3200m dash at 11:04.87.

Up next, the Owls travel to Johnsonburg on Tuesday before heading to Harbor Creek for another invitational on Saturday. 

Softball

Port Allegany 6, Bradford 5

BRADFORD, PA – Despite a second-half surge, the Lady Owls were unable to complete the comeback over the Lady Gators, ultimately suffering their fifth loss of the season.

Bradford was led by Daisy Greene, who went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, notching two RBIs alongside her five strikeouts while in the circle. Alexis Kicior scored twice during her 2-for-4 day in the batters’ box, followed by Samantha Miller, who ended 2-for-4 with two RBIS. 

For the Lady Gators, who improved to 3-1, Breah Fillhart went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two more batted in, while Brynn Evens, Bria Wilcox, Jaidyn Mahon, Payton Gordon and Addison Taylor all registered hits in the win. Wilcox also fanned six batters while in the circle.
