Olean Mayor-elect Amy Sherburne will deliver her first State of the City Address Friday when the Olean Common Council meets at 6 p.m. in council chambers at the Municipal Building.

It will be the first time in 12 years that outgoing Mayor Bill Aiello will not be delivering the State of the City Address.

A  Republican, Sherburne, who had been endorsed by Democrats, beat Aiello in the Republican Primary and again in the General Election when he ran on the independent Lincoln Party ballot line.

A businesswoman, Sherburne has spent the weeks since the election meeting with advisors and supporters. She has listened to them and asked questions on how she can make the most of the early days of her administration.

In a recent interview with the Olean Star, Sherburne spoke of her hope to help lead “a resurgence of our quality of life.”

The aldermen will vote to confirm Sherburne’s first appointment, Michael A. Morgan of Morgan and Associates PLLC, as city attorney.

Bridget Marshall, who served as city attorney under Aiello since November 2024, submitted her resignation last week.

The Common Council will also vote on a new council president. Ward 6 Democrat Vernon Robinson Jr., was elected president in the fall after then Council President John Crawford, D-Ward 5 stepped down.

Robinson said he would be nominated to continue to serve as council president. It’s not clear whether he will have any opposition. Robinson was elected 4-3 over Ward 4 Alderwoman Sonya McCall, a Democrat.

Aldermen will be sworn in first, followed by the mayor. Sherburne will then give her State of the City Address before announcing other mayoral appointments.
