PORTVILLE, NY – Despite trailing for the three first quarters, the Portville girl’s basketball team stayed resilient, sparking a late-game comeback to secure their second win of the season with a 37-35 victory over Pioneer.
For the first 24 minutes of the game, the Panthers couldn’t find a lead despite it being always within sight. At the end of each quarter, they sat just below the deficit, holding a four-point disadvantage heading into the final quarter. However, at the top of the fourth, the Panthers stole the momentum with a 7-0 run, eventually taking a 27-25 lead with a steal from Ali Haynes and fastbreak score from Quinn Scott. From there, each team poured on points back-and-forth. With just under a minute and a half left in the contest, Addie Isaman pulled up for a mid-range jumper, making the shot and drawing a foul. Converting the three-point play, Portville took the lead for good, improving to 2-0.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with the effort every girl displayed from tip off until the final buzzer,” said Portville head coach Inga Welty. “This team might be smaller in quantity than what our program is used to, but their heart and passion for helping everyone on the team succeed is huge. As their coach, I’m excited that I get to watch their growth.”
Haynes ended one rebound short of a double-double, scoring a team-high 11 points and pulling down nine boards alongside four steals. Quinn Scott reached double-digit points with 10, also tallying three steals and three assists.
