TUESDAY ROUNDUP: Portville, Salamanca boys soccer split league openers; Lady Owls volleyball pick up fifth win

PORTVILLE, NY – In their first taste of league play, the Portville boy’s soccer team came out swinging, posting a 4-0 shutout over Cassadaga Valley/Falconer with balanced scoring in both halves. 

After opening their season with back-to-back draws against Genesee Valley and Ellicottville/Franklinville, the Panthers began to pick up steam, pulling out a 5-1 win over Bolivar-Richburg and a 1-0 win over Olean. Entering the first game of their Chautauqua Cattaraugus Division 1 slate, Portville had the momentum. 

It would take them just 18 minutes to pull ahead, with Garrett Reynolds punching in the first goal of the day off an assist from John Neeson. Twelve minutes later, Colin German tallied his sixth goal of the season to put the Panthers up 2-0 before halftime. Finishing off Cassadaga Valley, the Panthers struck twice in rapid succession in the 60th and 64th minute with goals from Luke Edwards and German, sealing their third win of the season.

Portville will look to stretch their hot streak to four on Thursday when they face another league opponent in Pine Valley/Gowanda. That match is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start in Pine Valley.

St. Marys 6, Port Allegany 1

ST. MARYS, PA – Unable to tie on a tourniquet, Port United fell behind early and failed to mount a comeback, suffering their ninth loss of the season. 

The Gators’ lone goal of the day came from Alex Schott while Aiden Stuckey recorded 13 saves in the net.  

Randolph 10, Salamanca 0

RANDOLPH, NY – The Warriors’ season struggles continued to pile up, leading to a blowout loss in their first game of league play.

The Cardinals would waste no time getting into the swing of things, scoring early and often as they tallied nine goals through the opening half. Putting the final touches on their fifth victory, Randolph found the back of the net one more time in the 51st minute to hand Salamanca their fifth loss. 

Volleyball

Bradford 3, Ridgway 0

BRADFORD, PA – Led by Haley Keane’s iron-clad defense at the net, the Lady Owls added another shutout sweep to the win column, beating the Lady Elkers 25-11, 25-15 and 25-14. 

Keane finished with six blocks as she dominated as a part of Bradford’s front line, also coming away with 19 kills while Emma Pilon finished with 11 kills. Addison Carter had seven while Aliya Corignani recorded two kills to go with her 35 assists. 

Randolph 3, Salamanca 1 (Sept. 15)

SALAMANCA, NY – After a hard-fought match, the Salamanca girls volleyball team fell in four sets to Randolph.

The Warriors lost 25-18, 24-26, 11-25, 22-24 to the Cardinals. For Salamanca, Ayla Newark had six kills, McKenzie Crouse had four kills and Jorja Miller had three kills.

Cross Country

Bradford 21, Elk County 36

ST. MARYS, PA – Kadyn Tessena and Evan Troisi tied for first as they came up with a big win in their dual meet against the Crusaders and Elkers. 

Jordan Hogue finished not too far behind Bradford’s star duo, claiming third with a time of 19:07. Bradford’s Tony McDonald and Kamil Chin rounded out the top ten with times of 19:39 and 19:39.9. 

Also running for the Owls was Nikolai Frontino (12th – 20:01), Cavan Drake (13th – 20:16), Langdon Krepp (15th – 20:46, a personal best), Miles Hawk (18th – 21:27) and Owen Tingley (21st– 23:02).  

In the middle school heat, Charlie Vinelli won his seventh straight race with a time of 9:08.8, which stands as his fastest time ever. Vinelli narrowly missed the school record by five seconds, but still completed the course with the third fastest time on record. 

Girls: Southwestern 30, CSP 38, Maple Grove 53, Salamanca No Score

Boys: Maple Grove 24, CSP 37, Southwestern 74, Salamanca No Score

PANAMA, NY – Facing a field of four, the Warriors were unable to make the podium despite strong finishes from a handful of runners.

Laliee Pierce led the Warriors varsity girl’s team with a ninth place finish, crossing the finish line at a time of 25:26. Behind her, Kailee Lemon came in eleventh at 25:45. For the boys, who competed in the final race of the day, Denver Parsons came in 13th with a time of 21:24, followed by George Parsons in 17th and Preston Smith at 27th with a time of 23:55. 

Girls: Olean 18, Franklinville/Ellicottville 38, Allegany-Limestone INC, West Valley INC

Boys: Franklinville/Ellicottville 24, Olean 32, Allegany-Limestone INC, West Valley INC

ALLEGANY, NY – Three top-five finishers paced the Olean girls cross country team as they took first at Allegany-Limestone’s home meet.

May Eaton (third place, 21:41), Kinley Belleisle (fourth place, 22:03) and Rachael Dulmus (fifth place (22:44) led the Huskies to a win with 10 points. But the top local finisher in the race was Allegany-Limestone’s Abby Higgins. The eighth-grader finished second overall, just six seconds behind first place, with a time of 21:31. Other top finishers for the Gators included Lila Sheehy, who took sixth with a time of 23:40 and Aralyn Jennings, who placed eighth with a 24:46 time.

As for the boys meet, Franklinville/Ellicottville took top spot, led by second-place finisher Grant Cornell and fourth-place finisher Ben Wedvik. 

Olean took second place as a team behind Cruz Clark’s fifth-place finish (18:49) and Declan Boutillette’s sixth place finish (19:10). Colin Simons was the only other Husky to finish in the top 10, placing ninth with 20:30 time. However, the highest-placed local finisher was Allegany-Limestone’s Nolan Wilczewski, who took third overall with a time of 17:09. Aiden Grimes (16th, 25:33) and Ronin Haseley (18th, 27:30) were the next top finishers for the Gators.

Swimming and Diving

Southwestern/Jamestown 119, Salamanca 64

Despite putting up 36 personal best times, the Warriors were unable to pick up another win, instead settling back to 0.500 at 2-2.

Rileigh Hutchison took Salamanca’s lone first place finish in the one-meter dive with her best performance of the season. Julianna Smith also had personal bests in the 50 and 100 meter breast stroke while Vada Bucktooth did the same in the 50 breast, 50 free and 100 free. Alexa Reed and Ella Martens both excelled with PRs in the 50 free, with Reed also improving her best time in the 50 fly and Martens improving in the 100 breast and 200 IM.
