Champions racking up ribbons at the Cattaraugus County Fair

LITTLE VALLEY — Sixteen-year-old Addyson Shawley of Randolph won Supreme Dairy Cow honors at the 183rd Cattaraugus County Fair this week.

Athena, a two-year-old senior Holstein is a big cow. She is almost as tall as Addyson.

Her grandparents, Dana and Julie Shawley of DJ Farms in Mansfield, encouraged Addyson to get involved in 4-H by showing cows. Her parents, Scott and Melissa Shawley, do not live on a farm, so she has begun to build her own herd of cows at her grandparents’ farm.

Addyson is a member of the Variety Pack 4-H Club.

“I love this,” Adyson said, standing behind Athena. “I ‘ do my summer without this.”

Her sister Olivia is a New York Dairy Ambassador, promoting dairy products at events. Addyson was an associate Dairy Ambassador for two years.

Next week, she’s going to pitch in and help Hills Valley Farm in Cattaraugus exhibit their brown Swiss cows at the Erie County Fair.

Cattaraugus County 4-H members continue to collect ribbons at the fair at various shows this week.

Monday’s events consisted of the 4-H/FFA and Open Goat Shows and contests including Livestock and Dairy Judging among other things. The hot weather on Tuesday led to an exhausting day for many 4-H members as they competed in the 4-H/FFA Dairy Show and the 4-H/FFA and Open Rabbit Shows. The Horse Arena was also packed with events on Monday and Tuesday as youth competed in English, Western, and Gymkhana classes.

The 4-H events will culminate on Saturday with the 4-H Meat Animal Sale beginning at 10:30 a.m. Come bid on locally grown livestock to fill your freezer.
