OLEAN — The City of Olean’s first annual Fire Truck Spray Event on Thursday couldn’t have happened at a better time.
With temperatures in the low 90s, War Veterans Park was a piece of Heaven as the Olean Fire Department brought a ladder truck with a hose mounted on top.
It sprayed water on the crowd of hundreds of children — and some adults — from nearly 100 feet up.
There was a second hose attached to a ground-based spray nozzle. A light breeze carried some of the spray to people sitting beyond the blacktopped area near the mural on the wall of the William O. Smith Recreation Center.
A smaller third hose manned by Firefighter Chad Carlton was used to let youngsters try their hand using the hose to lay down anther cooling spray.
Through all the spray, two teams of youngsters managed to play basketball.
The city advertised the spray event on its Facebook page and website.
Parents and children — many in their swimsuits — were waiting when the fire truck and firefighters arrived to set up at War Veterans Park.
