HORSEHEADS, NY — The scoring opportunities were there for the Salamanca Lizards in their 7-1 loss to the Horseheads Hitmen, but to their dismay they were unable to cash in when it mattered most.
For the Lizards, it was not a matter of the bats failing to produce in their entirety. In fact, they were out-hitting their hosts on the day 6-4 before the Hitmen officially put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs on four hits.
The problem for Salamanca was that it was just unable to find those timely connections. On three separate occasions throughout the affair — in the second, third and eighth frames — the Lizards were sent back to their dugout while having the bases loaded. In the latter of those three instances, the visitors were on the verge of finding the breakthrough they were in need of.
Scenes reminiscent of their game the night before in which the Lizards stormed back to rescue a tie against the Hornell Steamers, they threatened to play the spoiler, jumping on the board after recording three consecutive, one-out singles and drawing a walk with the bases loaded. The chance for more was there, but two quick outs immediately after the walk and an empty top of the ninth inning sank Salamanca.
In terms of pitching, Salamanca’s unit had a bit of an up and down day. Josh Martos, who got the start for the Lizards, fought to find the strike zone consistently. He went six innings, striking out seven, walking eight and not allowing an earned run in that time. He was replaced by Alex Rumfola, who Horseheads jumped on, tallying four runs on the five hits he gave up. Harley Hoag recorded the last two outs on the bump for Salamanca.
With the loss, the Lizards moved to 2-3-1 on the season with a June 17 road affair against the Genesee Rapids starting at 7 p.m. up next.
