SPRINGVILLE – After suffering a loss at the start of the season, the Salamanca girls’ basketball team has bounced back with two wins, the most recent being a 48-30 road win over Springville.
With their defense smothering the Lady Devils and grinding their offense to a halt, the Lady Warriors were able to create scoring opportunities on the other end. However, after coming away with a seven-point advantage after the first quarter, a couple of 3-pointers from Springville kept it close going into halftime.
Needing to gain some separation on the scoreboard entering the second half, Salamanca put their foot on the gas. As five Lady Warriors made their way into the scoring column in the third quarter, Salamanca once again put themselves in the driver’s seat, heading into the final quarter of play up 20. From there, all they had to do was wait out the final eight minutes, securing their second win of the season.
Maliyah Foster and Skyla Dowdy ended in double-digit figures for Salamanca, scoring 13 and 11, respectively. Leilene McComber scored six while Makenzie Crouse ended with five.
“It was another solid team win. All the girls are working together and are on the same page both offensively and defensively,” said Salamanca head coach Joe Hinman. “The girls have been really great at making the in-game adjustments in between timeouts, quarters and just communicating overall.”
Up next, the Lady Warriors will stay on the road, traveling to Franklinville on Wednesday.

Punxsutawney 60, Bradford 33
PUNXSUTAWNEY, PA – Playing in their first District 9 League game, the Lady Owls were unable to stop Punxsy’s red hot shooting from deep, losing on the road as the team fell back to.500.
Having rested for the past seven days, Bradford had a considerable amount of rust to knock off coming into their Friday matchup against the Lady Chucks. That, coupled with the natural shooters on Punxsy’s roster gave way to a lopsided game after the first two quarters. Through the initial 16 minutes, the Lady Chucks knocked down five 3-pointers to Bradford’s one.
That trend would continue, especially in the fourth quarter, when Punxsy’s Danielle Griebel hit five by herself on the way to a game-high 27 points. As the shooting continued, the gap on the scoreboard only grew, sending Bradford home with their second loss of the season.
Two Lady Owls ended in double-digits, with Haley Keane leading the way with 17 and her point guard counterpart, Alyssa Johnson, ending with 11.

Salamanca Indoor Track and Field
HOUGHTON, NY – Opening their season by traveling to Houghton University, the Salamanca boys’ and girls’ indoor track and field team started off with a hot start, collecting 25 personal records and six school records.

Freshman rookie, Denver Parsons also ran the 3200m and is now No. 4 on the SHS top 10. Remy Follman sprinted his way to a PR in the 55m and is now No. 5 on the top ten. George Parsons, another freshmen rookie, ran the 1,000m and is No. 4 on the school top ten, while Aiden George and Knox Johnson both ran for PRs in the 600m and are No. 4 and No. 6 respectively on the top ten.

“In year four of indoor track and field at SHS, we have the best numbers yet,” Salamanca boys head coach Michelle Hill. “With only two seniors, we hope to see these numbers continue to grow. For the first time that I can remember, we have more distance runners than sprinters, another exciting trend. It was a great start and we cannot wait to see what this season brings.”
For the girls, Ryanna Brady shaved off 22 seconds from her best indoor 1500 time (5:18.82) , good enough for a new school record and qualifying for the Section 6 championships. She also competed in the 3000m run whittling away 13 seconds for another school record. Isabella Milks triple jumped to 32-3” setting a new school record previously held by Michaelynn Lecceardone. This jump also qualified her for the Section 6 Championships.
