ALLEGANY — The new $1.5 million Allegany Rescue and EMS Headquarters is taking shape on a hill along Route 417 between the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse and St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
Steel arrived last week and was quickly erected by employees from Kinley Construction. They are attaching roof supports this week and may begin working on installing the roof later in the week, weather permitting.
“It should be completed and ready to move in this fall,” said Jim O’Brien, president of the Allegany Rescue and EMS board of directors.
“They’re doing a great job,” said Jerry Cummins, chief operating officer of Allegany Rescue and EMS, which is separate from the Allegany Fire Department.
“The steel was delayed by 10 days, but it’s up now,” O’brien said on Friday as he and Cummins walked around the site where the original Motherhouse was located.
The first truck of steel arrived at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, O’Brien said. “The first steel was going up by 9 o’clock.”
The L-shaped headquarters will contain 5,800 square feet of space for training, storage and bays for the Rescue and EMS vehicles.
Fundraising is continuing for the Allegany Rescue and EMS headquarters. The non-profit ambulance and rescue service serves Allegany, Humphrey and St. Bonaventure University.
The groups website offers options for donations for the new headquarters at https://alleganyrescueems.org
O’Brien said donations may be made through PayPal or by sending a check to PO Box 217, Allegany, NY 14706.
O’Brien said Allegany Rescue and EMS has outgrown its current site in the former Allegany Fire Hall on North First Street, across from the new fire hall.
Allegany Rescue and EMS has answered nearly 9,800 calls since it was formed in 2010. So far this year, the group has responded to 623 calls and in May had 51 calls.
There are 32 members in Allegany Rescue and EMS, some of whom are also firemen. To become a volunteer, call (716) 373-1245.
