PORTVILLE, NY – Led by Ashley Carls work on both sides of the ball, the Portville girls’ basketball team continued their hot streak to open the season, beating Genesee Valley/Belfast 40-20 to improve to 3-0.
Starting the season with three consecutive home games has proved fruitful for the Lady Panthers, beating Cuba-Rushford and Pioneer before taking on the Jaguars. Opening the gates strong, Portville poured on points, almost doubling GVB’s in each quarter. At the tip of the spear was Carls, who led the team in scoring with 11 points while also contributing three steals in the win.
“Ashley had a great game for us tonight. It wasn’t because she scored 11 points. It was more about her help defense and getting numerous tips on the ball,” said Portville head coach Igna Welty. “Genesee Valley/Belfast played hard the entire game and should be commended for it.”
Alongside Carls was Ali Haynes, who ripped down eight rebounds while tallying eight points and Ava Jo Edwards who also scored eight points along with three assists.
The Lady Panthers will have six days before their next game, when they open a two-game road trip with a rematch of Cuba-Rushford on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

BRADFORD, PA – After suffering a blowout loss to open the week, the Owls responded with ironclad defense as they earned their second win of the season over the Wolves.
While holding Kane to just a single point in each of the first two quarters, Bradford got to work on offense. Leading the charge was Marcus Terwilliger, who scored all of his ten points in the opening half, and Evan Troisi, who helped spark the Owls out of the gate with four points. Coming down the line, as the Wolves continued to struggle, Bradford closed the game out at the free throw line, shooting 6-for-11 in the final two quarters.
Playing their next game in less than 24 hours, the Owls won’t have much time to rest on any laurels. Tomorrow, Bradford will end their three-game homestand with a match up against their first District 9 League opponent Punxsutawney.
