BATAVIA, NY — The Olean Oilers saw their league-high, five-game win streak come to an end following a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Batavia Muckdogs.
Compared to their 17-2 rout of the Auburn Doubledays in their previous game, the Oilers had a quiet day offensively, combining for just five hits. Batavia’s pitching staff was largely responsible keeping Olean off the basepaths, especially starter Noah Nix who struck out eight and gave up just three hits and one walk in 6.0 frames.
However, the Oilers did threaten to play the spoiler late, getting two batters on base without an out on the board in the top of the ninth. Conner Vercollone shaved the guest’s deficit down to just a run, scoring on a ground out from Brayden Rader — which stood as the second out of the frame after Darek Staudt struck out swinging the at-bat prior.
The grounder also saw Grant Fournier move to second, meaning a base hit would likely see Olean force the Muckdogs into the bottom of the ninth. But one final strikeout from Batavia’s pitching staff, which finished with 14 on the night, slammed the door shut.
Fournier led the Oilers’ offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Denny Martin (1-for-3, run, double) also made an impact at the plate.
Brendan Roche got the start for Olean and went 3.1 innings, striking out three. Hudson Iacuessa saw the team through the rest of the affair, racking up seven strikeouts.
