OLEAN — Democratic congressional candidate Aaron Gies of Olean cut the ribbon Tuesday for his campaign headquarters on North Union Street
About 50 friends and supporters crowded into the room which was last used as campaign headquarters for Amy Sherburne in her successful run for mayor last year.
Gies thanked friends, volunteers and supporters who attended the ribbon-cutting. It was his first campaign appearance in Olean since June 23 when he defeated Tonawanda attorney Kevin Stocker by 40 points. He thanked Stocker for the hard-fought primary that prepared him for the mid-term election against Rep. Nick Langworthy.
Gies has a second line on the November ballot on the Working Families Party and Conservative lines
Gies thanked groups and former congressional candidates who endorsed him in the primary, as well as Rep.Tim Kennedy, D-Bufflao.
His stump speech was about “what we’re up against.”
Gies said “crooked politicians getting rich off insider trading, who cut taxes for the wealthy and corporations they control, even while they cut Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP and VA benefits.”

Nick Langworthy, Gies said, “works for them. He supports their agenda for extraction. He makes excuses for policies that hurt this district, that hurt farmers, that hurt teachers and students, that hurt seniors, veterans and small businesses. He takes credit for spending he voted against. He makes unannounced speeches in empty rooms with five guys in suits standing behind him.”
Gies said Langworthy will have the support of President Trump and the Epstein class. “If we rattle him, and I think we have, he will fill the airwaves with hate and liesYou will be able to hear his negative ads in drain pipes and hearing aids.”
Langworthy, he said, “already has Fox News calling me a socialist. They don’t understand the common good. They don’t know what it’s about. They can’t imagine a politics based on treating your neighbor the way you want to be treated, and they’re not going to try.”
Much of Gies’ message revolves around affordability. He also made a pitch for support from Republicans and independents.
“We all need the government to be responsible and accountable, and to deliver for ordinary people and stop delivering for the ultra rich,” Gies said. “A good life should be affordable for everyone.”
