AUBURN, NY – Seeing the Auburn Doubledays for the second time this summer, the Olean Oilers were unable to redeem their previous loss, falling 6-4 amidst their worst stretch of the season.

Dating back to their last home game on Friday, June 19, when the Oilers first saw Auburn, Olean has been unable to pull themselves out of a deepening rut, losing their four next games by a combined score of 27-14. In the Doubledays sequel, their lingering slump continued.

Thursday’s action opened up with a burst of runs against Olean, starting with four Auburn scores in the first frame and two more in the fourth. The Oilers eventually broke the stalemate in the top of the fourth and fifth, seeing Brady Smith round home to break the ice off a Grant Fournier sac-grounder and an unearned run one inning later by Cooper Tarlie, but their bats still failed to bring men around the diamond.

Although Auburn began to see the same shortcomings, going scoreless for the remainder of the evening, Olean was unable to close the deficit, despite scoring two more in the top of the seventh.

Leading the pack of nine Oiler hits was Fournier and Matt Boffalo, who both ended 2-for-4 with one run scored between them. Thomas Bates also ended with two hits in three trips to the plate, while Brady Berdine took the loss on the mound, striking out four through his 20 batters faced.

Olean (7-10) will wrap up their five-game road trip on Friday when they travel to see the Niagara Falls Americans (8-9). Then they will head back to Bradner for three straight home games, seeing Auburn again on Saturday, the Geneva Red Wings on Sunday and the Jamestown Tarp Skunks on Tuesday.
