PORT ALLEGANY, PA – In a preview to next week’s District 9 Class A first round matchup, the Port Allegany softball team pulled off a late comeback against Elk County Catholic, scoring eight in the bottom of the sixth to end their regular season with a win.

With both teams resting their star aces and shuffling up their positions in the field, the action started early. While ECC’s bats opened with five runs in the first, Port countered with six of their own during their first trip to the plate, seeing Brynn Evens, Peyton Gordon, Gianna Glasgow, Addison Taylor and Breah Fillhart register RBIs.

However, from there their bats cooled off. Meanwhile, the Lady Crusaders continued to bring runners across home plate, scoring eight more through the next two frames including on a home run from Lanie Weisner. Hanging zeros in both the second and third, the Lady Gators ultimately relit their flame with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, drawing to within four.

Then, they erupted. Loading the bases with their first three batters, Mahon and Kaitlyn Kallenborn stepped up and tied the game with a two-run RBI-single and a RBI-triple, respectively. Keeping the ball rolling, Port hopped in front with an RBIs from O’Rourke and Taylor. Although ECC batted in two more runs in the seventh, the Lady Gators’ lead, and final victory of the regular season, was preserved.

Mahon and O’Rourke both ended 3-for-4, with Mahon driving in four runs and scoring twice and O’Rourke scoring twice and batting in another. Kallenborn, Errick, Taylor, Fillhart and Glasgow each also scored twice during the win.

Port and ECC won’t have to wait long for a rematch, as the two teams are set to square off in the opening round of the upcoming D9 postseason. Port will host the Lady Crusaders on Monday at 4 p.m.
