Livestock judging a big part of Cattaraugus County Fair for 4-H participants; Market Animal Sale Saturday

LITTLE VALLEY — Cattaraugus County 4-H officials have released some early 183rd Cattaraugus County Fair livestocking judging results.

Livestock judging began in earnest on Monday with 4-H/FFA livestock and dairy judging. 4-H/FFA dairy goat and meat goat competition was also held Monday. Some judging was also held over the weekend, including the hog show on Sunday.

Several levels of Alpine goat and other goat competition were held on Monday in the livestock judging arena.

The Senior Alpine Champion was Austin Durow. Others competing in the class were Zailynne O’Neil and Eliyah Huey.

The 4-H Market Animal Sale on Saturday will feature 34 beef cows, 10 dairy steers, 10 goats, 27 lambs, 64 pigs, three pens of rabbits, 13 turkeys and 38 chickens. Bidding starts at 10:30 in the dairy/beef ring, then moves to the livestock ring. Homemade pies are also on the list of items to be sold to the highest bidder 

Free grounds entertainment including Lance the Magician, Swifty Swine Racing Pigs, Areli Equine Entertainment and Paul Bunyon Lumberjacks begin to encourage people to fill their bleachers 10-15 minutes before each show.

At Areli Equine Entertainment, for example, Rusty, the master of ceremonies, found himself describing Roman Riding while standing on the backs of twin horses. His daughter was the usual Roman rider, but she had to leave the show for the day, so he was standing in.

At the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show, lumberjacks Mason and Paladin competed in friendly log rolling. Paladin also did a solo log roll while juggling some knives and an apple.
