NORTH COLLINS, NY – Taking to the road for their first of four consecutive games played away from home, the Portville softball team survived an early slugfest, emerging with a 8-4 win over North Collins.
Taking to the plate in hostile territory, the Panthers wasted no time getting the ball rolling. After Madison Ford reached first on an Eagles error, Sienna Schoonover sent her across home plate with an RBI-triple immediately after. Batter No. 3, Ella Warters, then repeated the feat, driving in Portville’s second run of the afternoon with a sac-fly.
Although North Collins kept in stride with the Panthers, ultimately pulling ahead at 5-4 through the bottom of the third, Portville’s persistent bats prevailed. After tying the game at five in the fourth via a sacrifice bunt from Alexa Schoonover, Portville built a lasting cushion in the seventh with three final runs. Leaving two Eagles stranded on the baseline, the Panthers preserved their sixth win of the season.
Along with her eight strikeouts from the circle, Warters ended 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored. Isabella Morales went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run while Bella Young ended 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
With six games remaining on the regular season schedule, the next three will be on the road for the Panthers. First, on Friday, they will travel to Frewsburg before seeing Franklinville, Ellicottville and Catt-Little Valley next week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. All games are set for 5 p.m. starts.
