By SPENCER BATES

batesoleanstar@gmail.com

OLEAN — Through six innings, the Allegany-Limestone and Olean softball teams were stuck in a defensive battle.

The Gators and Huskies combined for just three hits heading into the seventh with the former holding 2-1 advantage — both runs were walked in during the very first frame.

The game would ultimately be decided by whichever team would find the breakthrough first. Olean threatened, scoring a run in the fifth inning, but, staving off the momentum that the hosts had been working to build, A-L was the one to break open the game. Much in part thanks to Kendall Truman.

The seventh-grader, coming to bat with the bases loaded and one out on the board, connected on a pitch for a line drive that found the center field fence. Before Olean could get the ball back in, the bases were empty, save for Kendall Truman (2-for-4, run, 3 RBI) that stood triumphantly at third base.

In the biggest moment of the game for the Gators, it was their youngest member of the lineup that came up clutch.

“Kendall did great today,” A-L head coach Kaelyn Arnold said. “She just did everything we asked her to and that’s all I can ask. We pulled her up today just to see what she could do, and she did everything that we asked her to. She did a great job, especially as a seventh-grader.”

However, the triple was just the start of a seventh-inning deluge of runs that provided the dagger. Kendall Truman was brought in to score on a single from Riley Sudbrook (1-for-4, 2 runs, RBI), who accounted for the final run of the game after scoring on an RBI single from Kailey Truman (2-for-2, run, RBI, 3 walks).

Arnold praised the experience and resolve of her players, as they did not just try to coast over the finish line with a narrow victory, but apply the knockout blow.

“I think we had 11 runners left on base in the first four innings,” Arnold said. “I told them, ‘we gotta find a way to score those.’ Unfortunately, it took until the seventh inning, but they never gave up. The adversity really showed. If we can do that all the way through these next couple of games, I think we’ll be OK.”

Allegany-Limestone’s Kailey Truman (10) winds up a pitch against Olean. Kailey Truman recorded eight strikeouts for the Gators in their win over the Huskies. (Spencer Bates)

The Huskies were held to just one hit on the day after a strong effort in the circle from Kailey Truman, who struck out eight batters and walked three. But not to be glossed over is the stellar performance Arnold got out of her entire defensive unit. More than one diving catch made in the outfield and an error-free game frustrated the hosts.

“The outfield made some great catches, great saves, and, I mean, all around it was a great, great team win,” Arnold said. “That’s what I told the team, it was a great team win. We can continue to build off of this. There are some things we still got to work on, but overall, it was a good team win.”

Prior to the seventh inning, Olean held their own on the defensive side as well. A-L had just two hits before the final frame and head coach Ryan Nawrot praised the effort.

“I think they played fantastic,” Nawrot said of his team’s defense. “I think we had some really good defensive plays. Unfortunately, (A-L) just hit those spots that we just couldn’t get to.
And you can’t really defend the spots if you’re not there. When we’re in those spots, though, we have great defense. We covered the slap well, and we backed up Tiana (Maine) very well.”

Maine got the start in the circle for the Huskies and while her four-strikeout to 12-walk ratio may stand out, she ultimately allowed minimal damage from those walks, doing well to battle back and strand numerous base runners. To Nawrot, that showed a level of maturity rare for a freshman.

“Allegany, knowing that they’re probably the other best team that’s in our league, our nerves were up,” Nawrot said. “We knew that they were gonna be a very good competitor. They were gonna bring their best pitching and hitting to the plate, and for a freshman to walk into a varsity softball game and be able to throw as well as she did, yeah, there were a couple walks in the beginning, but she bounced back and she pitched five great innings. Truthfully, even in that seventh inning there, she was still pitching well, they just finally caught up to her. … It’s a phenomenal thing to see a freshman come in and have pitching ability like that.”

Olean’s Tiana Maine (5) winds up a pitch against Allegany-Limestone. Maine tallied four strikeouts against the Gators. (Spencer Bates)

For Allegany-Limestone it is a fifth consecutive victory. It will look to keep the streak going in its next game, at home against Fredonia on May 1 at 5 p.m.

As for Olean, it will look to bounce back in its next affair, at Salamanca on April 29 at 5 p.m.

ST. MARYS, PA – Starting their four-day-four-game week on the road, self-inflicted wounds amounted to the Bradford softball team’s ninth loss of the season as they dropped to Elk County Catholic 12-0 in five innings.

After being put out in three, the Lady Owls saw ECC crack things open emphatically and early, starting with a lead-off home run from Lanie Weisner. The Lady Crusaders would tack on one more in the bottom of the first before erupting for five in the bottom of the second. Unable to capitalize with runners on base, Bradford failed to find a retaliation, instead ending the game on the wrong end of a shutout.

Daisy Greene, who picked up two strikeouts through four innings in the circle, ended with the Lady Owls lone hit of the day, going 1-for-2.

With no rest for the weary, Bradford will return home for two games against St. Marys and DuBois on Tuesday and Wednesday, before heading back out on the road for a fourth and final straight game against Clearfield on Thursday. All three are set to begin at 4 p.m.

By SPENCER BATES

batesoleanstar@gmail.com

OLEAN — Olean baseball head coach Les DeGolier described Austin Miles as the heartbeat of the team.

In an 11-0, six-inning mercy rule win over Fredonia, he was exactly that.

From start to finish, Miles was center stage for the Huskies.

After returning from an injury he picked up during this past football season and recording two quality starts on the mound, his third start might have been the best of the bunch. Through five innings, he racked up eight strikeouts and walked one batter without giving up a hit. Landon Johnson, who came in for relief, did not give up a hit in his inning on the bump either, solidifying a combined no-hitter.

But that’s not where Miles’ contributions ended. With a bat in his hands, he was just as dangerous. From the leadoff spot, Miles went 2-for-4 with a run, four RBI and a 3-run home run.

“He certainly is a complete package, and to have him healthy is obviously the biggest cog of this team,” DeGolier said of Miles. “His three starts so far this year have been dang near about as perfect as you can get. We slid him back into the lead off position because he’s the heart and soul, and he gets things started for us. If he’s rolling, we’re gonna be rolling. He’s certainly a special player.”

And while it wasn’t necessarily required on the day, the overall depth of the Huskies’ pitching unit has been critical to the team’s success. In its most recent game, at Fredonia, Noah Cartmill threw a complete game, striking out 13, walking two and giving up just four hits.

“It was one of the things I was excited about going into the season,” DeGolier said of his rotation of pitchers. “I feel like since I’ve started coaching, this is the most depth that I’ve had at that position. Being able to rely on a bunch of arms, I think we have five or six strong players that we have a lot of confidence in, that’s huge. It allows us to do things like give Miles a little shorter of a day to rest up for his next start. And we’re fully confident in the guy that comes behind him.”

Miles was certainly the star of the show, but not to be glossed over is the production Olean got from the rest of the team.

The Huskies’ last game at home was a 5-4 walk-off win over Southwestern which DeGolier dubbed a ‘complete team game.’ He got another one against the Hillbillies.

Olean tallied 10 hits as a team, with four players (Miles, Alex Jones, Dom Myers and Gehrig Perry) recording two hits apiece. Also all but one player made it across home plate at some point in the contest with Tyler Sullivan being responsible for three of the 11 runs his team scored.

After making a slight change following a three-up, three-down first inning, the Olean offense was unstoppable.

“We started a little slow, in the first inning, we were popping the ball up, we were kind of getting under it a little,” DeGolier said. “We told them to get on top of the ball a little bit more, focus on hitting line drives, and once we started doing that, we find the gaps, we get the hits. That was one of our things we were conscious of. We didn’t really cash in runners in scoring positions last Friday, and we wanted to make sure that we did that today. I thought, especially in the later innings, we certainly did that.”

Olean’s Dom Myers (11) connects on a pitch against Fredonia. Myers went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Huskies in their win. (Spencer Bates)

Another aspect of the win that DeGolier praised was the defense. It was the second consecutive game for the Huskies without an error and highlighting the effort behind Miles and Johnson was Gehrig Perry at shortstop, who picked and dished with expertise all afternoon.

“He’s huge. He’s smooth at short. He’s a little vacuum cleaner,” DeGolier said of Perry. “He plays the game the right way. It’s really fun to coach kids like him, and there’s a bunch of them on this team, but it’s certainly fun to watch Gehrig play short.”

Olean now finds itself in the midst of a three-game win streak and sitting with a 6-1 overall record.

It will look to put another tally in the win column on April 29 at 5 p.m. when it hosts Salamanca.

Olean Star

OLEAN — An Olean woman organized an Earth Day cleanup of the banks along the Allegheny River and Olean Creek that netted dozens of orange bags filled with trash on Saturday.

Faith Hustak came up with the idea of cleaning up along waterways in the city — Trash the Trash – Save the River and promoted it through a Facebook page and word of mouth. The Elk’s Club was also invited to participate.

On Saturday, two dozen volunteers showed up at Lincoln Park to get their assignments and orange plastic bags for the trash. After a safety talk, they fanned out to several sites along both the creek and river in the city.

Due to a steady rain, everyone wore rain gear and boots. They wore gloves for safety and worked in pairs. They found the dikes a little slippery from the rain.

“We found some unusual items — a deer head and another skull,” Hustak said later. She said she had been thinking about a cleanup for some time.

“I thought it would be a good time now since Olean has been experiencing major sewer issues and the Senecas were quite upset,” Hustak said. Mayor Amy Sherburne was receptive to the idea when Hustak approached her last month and gave her the go ahead.

City crews will weigh and collect the plastic bags of trash on Monday at Franchot Park where they were brought to from staging areas along the waterways, Hustak said.

She invited schools, clubs, companies and friends to the cleanup and invited others through the Trash the Trash — Save the River! Facebook page.

“I’d do this again,” Hustak told the Olean Star on Sunday. “I did get positive feedback saying it was fun and well-organized. People noted they were happy to help. The only negative would be there is so much more trash out there.”

DUBOIS, PA – A walk-off double from the Cardinals in the eighth sealed DuBois Central Catholics’ comeback as they outlasted an early Bradford surge, downing the Owls 7-6.

After falling behind 1-0 early, the Owls surged in the top of the second. Suffering two outs in the first five batters, Bradford then erupted seeing first an RBI-single from Sean Ward followed by a two-run double from Lucas Wallace and finally a two-run homer from Tarren Reese. However, with a 6-1 lead, their offense sputtered out from there. Meanwhile, the Cardinals caught up sooner rather than later, scoring five runs over the next two frames.

Through the final three innings of regulation, the scoreboard remained deadlocked at six, forcing an extra do-or-die frame. Unable to find the spark for a second time, Bradford was dispatched in just three. Then, giving up two walks in four batters, the Owls saw one last hit, a double from Carter Himes, hand them their eighth loss of the season.

Combining for five RBIs and two runs, Wallace and Reese both ended 1-for-4, while Brody Haviland scored once on a similar 1-for-4 day at the plate. Haviland also produced nine strikeouts during his four innings on the mound.

By SPENCER BATES

batesoleanstar@gmail.com

OLEAN — Prior to his last at-bat of the game, Olean’s Caine DeGolier was called over for a quick meeting with head coach Les DeGolier.

With the two batters preceding him reaching base and his team tied up at 4-4 with Southwestern in the bottom of the seventh inning, the baton was passed to him. All that was needed for a walk-off victory was a base hit.

Falling behind in the count 0-2, Caine DeGolier swung away and sent a hanging curveball into the opposite field, which scored Dom Myers, solidifying a 5-4 win.

“I told (Caine), ‘you know what you’re gonna see; spin,’” Les DeGolier said. “It’s not his favorite pitch to swing at, but when you know it’s coming, it’s different. ‘You practiced this Caine, you can do this. You’re gonna see three of them. Make sure you just time one of them up.’ Hitting it to right-center field is exactly how you teach a kid to hit a curve. Instead of smoking it on the top, pounding it into the ground and grounding out, you stay right through it. Textbook.”

The Huskies, squaring off against the Trojans for the second time in as many days, had done everything right through six innings of work, starting on the mound.

Austin Miles, in his second start since his return from injury, put together yet another superb stat line. Striking out nine batters and conceding just four hits, he put his team in the driver’s seat.

The Olean offense fed off the momentum Miles had provided and jumped out to a 4-1 lead after three innings. However, its lead did not come unearned.

Southwestern’s starting pitcher, Lucas Genareo, had some serious speed behind his deliveries, which forced the Huskies to adjust. They withheld from chasing pitches outside the zone and let the Trojans put themselves behind the 8-ball.

But even when the hosts were on base, they were not done causing chaos. Critically, two of Olean’s runs on the day came as a result of smart, opportunistic base-running.

“We took a little something from last night, and put some pressure on them,” Les DeGolier said of his team’s strategy.
”We thought that we could make some things happen by pushing it on the basepaths, and that seemed to work.”

Olean’s Dom Myers swings at a pitch against Southwestern. Myers went 3-for-4 with two runs for the Huskies in their win over the Trojans. (Spencer Bates)

In the latter innings of his outing, Miles conceded a few bases to the Trojans and a four-pitch walk that put a runner in scoring position in the fifth frame brought Les DeGolier out of the dugout for a chat. Notably, he left Miles in, showing he had trust in his man on the mound, and in response Miles struck out the last batter of the inning and got through the sixth unscathed as well.

“It’s composure and it’s belief,” Les DeGolier said. “Believing in themselves, individually, and believing in their teammates. This is a strong team, and they see each other make plays, they know that everybody can do it, that everybody can contribute. That carries over and gives them some confidence.”

Olean’s win was put in jeopardy as Southwestern scored two runs off relief pitcher Gehrig Perry to tie the game in the seventh. Les DeGolier stuck with Perry for as long as possible, but eventually made a change, putting Landon Johnson on the mound.

Johnson was tasked with preventing any more damage, a daunting task with just one out on the board and the bases loaded.

Johnson, just like Miles and Caine DeGolier, put on display the mental fortitude and resilience that radiates from this Olean team, retiring the Trojans with back-to-back strikeouts.

“It was a complete team game,” Les DeGolier said. “We talked before the game about having each other’s backs. We did have a couple of miscues, which is sort of uncharacteristic of us. … (Gehrig) got in a jam at the end there, but Landon came in and shut them down and gave us a chance to win the game. Those types of things, that’s why this team is strong, and that’s why this team is special.”

With the win, Olean moved to 4-1 on the season. It will travel to face Fredonia for its next game, on April 24 at 5 p.m.

ST. MARYS, PA – Seeing the Dutchmen for the second time in four days, the Bradford baseball team’s slump continued with a 13-3, five inning loss on the road.

After battling for seven innings with St. Marys on Saturday, the Owls quickly found themselves in a hole in the rematch, allowing seven through the first three frames. Although they put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the third with a sacrifice bunt from Max Gow, the Owls were unable to get past the opposing ace, Tysen Beimel, who came away with eight strikeouts through four innings on the mound.

Bradford scored another pair of runs in the top of the fifth with an RBI-double from Jaron Lohrman and a single from Gow, however, their gains went in vain as St. Marys tacked on another five runs in retaliation, concluding the game in five innings.

Gow ended with two RBIs, scoring Braylan Austin twice, while Tarren Reese finished 1-for-3 and both Lohrman and Lucas Wallace ended 1-for-2.

Sitting at 3-7, Bradford will conclude the week on the road, heading to DuBois Central Catholic for a Friday game at 4:15 p.m.

SHINGLEHOUSE, PA – Allowing a wave of runs in the first frame, the Terrors were unable to complete the comeback as they suffered their eight loss of the season.

Scoring on a combination of well placed shots and O-E errors, the Green Wave built up an early advantage early, entering the second frame up 9-0. Although the Terrors immediately began chipping away at the deficit, scoring runs in all of the next four innings, the mountain ahead of them was too high to climb.

Grady VanCamp finished 3-for-4 at the plate for O-E with one run batted in, while Colby Wilcox went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Macaibe Splain ended 1-for-3 with an RBI as well, followed by Jack Sherry, who scored twice.

At 1-8, O-E’s challenges are far from over. On Wednesday, they will see the North Tier League-leading Port Allegany Gators. That game will be played in Eldred at 4:30 p.m.
