March 11, 1950 – October 17, 2026
Charles “Bill” Green passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
Born on March 11, 1950, Bill was the son of Charles W. Green and Jeanne Place Green. He grew up in Salamanca, New York, where he graduated from Salamanca High School. It was in eighth grade that Bill met his best friend and the love of his life, Shirley J. (Hutcheson) Green.
A proud graduate of Salamanca High School’s Class of 1968, Bill and Shirley maintained close friendships with many of their classmates throughout their lives. Those enduring connections remained an important part of their story.
Following high school, Bill attended the State University of New York at Albany, where he studied accounting, served as a resident assistant, and was a part of Greek life. After graduating in 1972, Bill married Shirley later that year on September 2 at St. Mary’s Church in Salamanca.
Bill began his banking career at Salamanca Trust Company on Main Street in Salamanca, where he worked his way up to president. He later joined Cattaraugus County Bank in Little Valley, New York, as executive vice president and COO. Bill served on the board of the Bank of Cattaraugus and was an active member of the Cattaraugus County Bankers Association. He also held memberships with the Independent Bankers Association of New York State, New York State Bankers Association, and The American Bankers Association. Throughout his more than 30 years in banking, Bill was a respected leader and forward thinker in the banking community.
Outside of work, Bill was an avid golfer and a dedicated member of Elkdale Country Club. He served on the club’s board and eventually as its president. Golf was his favorite pastime, and in retirement, Bill and Shirley embraced more opportunities to travel. Their adventures took them to Key West, the British Virgin Islands, Myrtle Beach, Palm Springs, and Ireland, just to name a few. One particularly memorable trip to Ireland gave Bill the opportunity to play a round of golf, combining two of his greatest pleasures: travel and the game he loved.
Above all, Bill treasured his family. He took great pride in attending the athletic and theatrical events of his daughters and, later, his three grandchildren. Whether cheering them on at Salamanca High School, Allegany-Limestone Schools, Hamilton College, Baldwin-Wallace College, or Alfred University, Bill was there to support the people he loved.
Bill is survived by his two daughters, Sheila Green-Callen (Tom), Allegany, NY, and Christie Green. East Aurora, NY; his sister, Barbara Morgan, Tavares, FL; and his three grandchildren, Thomas Callen, Madison Callen, and Ryan Callen.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Shirley J. Green; his parents, Charles and Jeanne Green; and his uncle, Stephen C. Green.
Friends may call on the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc Funeral Home, 25 River St. Salamanca, NY on Thursday, October 22, 2026 from 3pm to 7pm.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Friday at 1pm with Dec. Michael Anderson officiating.
