PORTVILLE, NY – Facing their sixth league opponent of the season, the Portville volleyball team kept their iron grip on the standings, picking up a sixth win via sweep of Falconer.
Looking to secure their fourth consecutive win, the Panthers got to business early, picking up a dominant 25-12 win in the first set of the night. From there, Portville weathered a brief comeback, winning 25-17 in the second before completing the sweep with a final 25-12 victory to finish off the Golden Falcons.
Gaitley Maiolo ended with a team-high 11 kills alongside four aces and four digs, followed by Ava Scanlon with seven digs, four aces and six kills. Emily Scanlon and Leigha Stives both also had six kills, while Marissa Carls ended with 26 assists, two aces and three kills.
Portville will enjoy an off-day on Friday before traveling to Olean on Saturday for an 11 a.m. rematch against the Huskies.
Oswayo Valley 3, Port Allegany 1
SHINGLEHOUSE, PA – Traveling to see the Green Wave, the Lady Gators came up empty, dropping in four sets.
After going down in the first at 25-19, Port responded with a 25-18 victory, evening the night. However, from there, OV cleaned house, winning 25-10 and 25-16.
Port’s Molly Barber facilitated the offense with 26 assists while Jaidyn Mahon ended with 12 kills.
Olean 3, Southwestern 2
OLEAN, NY – After a loss to Fredonia at home, it would take the Huskies all five sets to return to the win column as they eventually topped the Trojans.
Olean opened the game hot, picking up back-to-back set wins at 25-17 and 26-24 before Southwestern finally responded. Winning 27-25 and 25-20, Southwestern pushed the night to a fifth and final. Once there, the Huskies narrowly snuck out the victory at 15-13.
Gowanda 3, Allegany-Limestone 0
ALLEGANY, NY – Up against the 7-1 Panthers, A-L was unable to make a dent, losing 25-22, 25-11 and 25-12.
With the loss, the Gators fall to 3-4 on the season and will next play Southwestern at home on Monday.
Boy’s Soccer
Northern Potter 5, Port United 0
PORT ALLEGANY, PA – In a non-league battle at home, the Gators were ultimately shut out as their season struggles continued.
Jimmy Sneed tended the net for Port on the afternoon, coming away with ten saves through 80 minutes.
With the loss, Port now sits at 1-8-1 overall.
Girl’s Soccer
Fredonia 3, Olean 0
OLEAN, NY – Allowing three goals in the second half, the Huskies ultimately fell to 2-6 on the season.
Suffering their fifth consecutive loss, Olean looks to bounce back with an uphill battle against Portville on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Salamanca 2, Ellicottville 1, 2 OT
SALAMANCA, NY – With just four seconds left, Addison Earley staved off a draw with a clutch penalty kick to deliver a fifth win to the Warriors.
After going down by a goal early on, Myla Galante netted the equalizer with three minutes to go into regulation. In goal, Gwyn Emborsky came away with four saves in goal.
Junior High Football
Smethport 20, Port Allegany 12
SMETHPORT, PA – Three Hubbers scored as the Smethport junior high football team picked up their inaugural win of the season.
Logan Reese and AJ Yingling both ran into the endzone for the Orange and White, while Bo Dowell returned an interception back to the house for another six points. Evan Fitzsimmons and Everett Smith also reinforced the defense, coming away with an interception and forced sack fumble, respectively.
For Port, Canyon Young and Cameron Carlson both scored on the ground.
