ALLEGANY, NY – Defending their home turf as well as their home tournament, the Allegany-Limestone boy’s soccer team christened their season with a 2-0 win over Chautauqua Lake.
The Gators opened the action early, with Owen Buzzard notching his first of two goals in the opening three minutes. Donny Booker came away with the assist, while Owen Gustason recorded another, feeding Buzzard for the game-sealing score.
Moving into the second day of the Gator Cup, A-L will next play the winner of the Bradford-versus-Ellicottville game, which is slated for Friday, on Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
Westfield-Brocton 5, Olean 0
DUNKIRK, NY – Opening their season in the Dunkirk Tournament, the Huskies were unable to stop Parker Gambino, who led Eagles’ to a lopsided victory.
Although Olean’s defense held strong through the first 40 minutes, allowing themselves to fall behind by just one goal, the floodgates opened in the second. Netting his second shot of the day in the 12th minute of the second half, Gambino punched in another eight minutes later before his teammates, Braylon Swanson and Caleb Stoughton followed suit to build a 5-0 advantage.
The Huskies will return to action for the second day of the tournament, playing an opponent to be announced at noon.
Salamanca 1, Silver Creek-Forestville 0
SALAMANCA, NY – Kicking off their season in friendly territory, the Warriors escaped a deadlocked match with the Black Knights to earn their first win of the campaign.
Through nearly 70 minutes of play, neither team could find an edge, let alone a goal. However, with just over ten minutes left on the clock, Salamanca’s Easton Chudy broke the ice. Taking a pass from Drew Clayson, Chudy tallied the first Warrior goal of the season, one that held fast as they outlasted Silver Creek-Forestville.
Salamanca next plays Ellicottville-Franklinville on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at home at 4:30 p.m.
Volleyball
Bradford 3, Brockway 0
BRADFORD, PA – Bouncing back from their first loss of the season, the Lady Owls returned to the win column with a sweep of Brockway.
Haley Keane ended with 12 kills and six blocks alongside 12 aces while Sophia Lama came away with 29 assists. Addison Rosendahl recorded 10 blocks, six kills and two aces in the win.
Salamanca 3, Ellicottville 1
ELLICOTTVILLE, NY – Heading up to the Eagles’ Nest, the Warriors returned home with a win, beating Ellicottville in four.
Salamanca opened with early back-to-back set wins to the tune of 25-14 and 25-23, before falling to the Eagles, 25-22. The Warriors then cleaned up the night with a 25-22 to seal the victory.
Salamanca stays on the road for their next contest, traveling to play Catt-Little Valley on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Girl’s Soccer
Frewsburg 5, Allegany-Limestone 4
FREWSBURG, NY – In a back-and-forth barrage, the Gators were narrowly unable to overcome a late-deficit, falling to 0-1 on the season.
A-L’s Kennedy Honeck and Leea Kopp both walked away with two goals a-piece, while Kenna MacArthur and Kai Wojewoda-Ko each registered assists. Meagan Morgan started in goal, coming away with four saves on seven shots faced before being relieved by Morgan, who nabbed five saves on seven shots as well.
(The boy’s soccer game between Portville and Avoca-Prattsburg, the girl’s soccer game between Portville and East Aurora and the volleyball game between Otto-Eldred and Austin were all postponed.)
