Gary L. Sherburne, loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle

State College, PA – Gary L. Sherburne passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 17, 2026, in his home. Born April 19, 1939, in Olean, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Bessie (Ostrander) Sherburne.

Gary graduated from Olean High School in 1957 and earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from St. Bonaventure University in 1964. He served in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division from 1958 to 1961.

On August 22, 1964, in St. Mary of the Angels Church, Olean, he married the former Mary Ann Ramire, they would have been celebrating their 62nd Anniversary.

Gary held several management positions with Graphic Controls, Buffalo, NY, AVX Ceramics, Olean, NY, Centre Engineering, State College, PA, SEDA-COG Local Development Corporation, Lewisburg, PA, Mellon Bank, State College, PA, and ended his career as Vice President of Citizens Bank, State College, PA.

Gary enjoyed youth, college, and professional sports, especially St. Bonaventure and the Buffalo Bills, as well as golfing, skiing, traveling, and spending time with longtime friends and family. He was a passionate learner about civil war history. He was a longtime member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, State College, PA and past member of St. Mary of the Angels Church, Olean, NY. He also served as the President of the English Meadows Homeowners Association in State College, PA for many years after retirement.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Michelle (Bruce) Cohen, Harrisburg, PA; Mark (Sue Cacciotti) Sherburne, Bethesda, MD; and Lynn (Bill) Carey, Bellefonte, PA; grandchildren: Madeline and Ethan Cohen of Harrisburg, PA; and Shaun and Laura Carey of Bellefonte, PA; sisters-in-law: Patricia (Ed) Moran of Olean; Stella Sherburne of Portville; brothers-in-law: Anthony (Sharon) Ramire of Allegany; David (Ann) Ramire of Olean; along with several nieces and nephews.

Gary was predeceased by his parents, sister Carol (Sue) Limerick, and brothers Ronald Sherburne, Dale (Bud) Sherburne, and Joseph Sherburne.

Family will receive friends this Friday, August 21, 2026, from 5:00-7:00pm at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton Street in State College, PA. Additional services will be held in Olean, New York, with visitation on Sunday, August 23, 2026, from 4:00-7:00pm at Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 East State Street Olean. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00am on Monday, August 24, 2026, at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels followed by a grave side service at St. Bonaventure Cemetery, with full military honors accorded by the Allegany American Legion Ritual Team immediately following.
