OLEAN – The Penn York Junior Golf League’s 57th season came to an end last week at Bartlett Country Club. And in addition to the event’s major awards, the finale also produced a new boys’ Division I weekly champion and the end of the season’s two longest winning streaks.
Liam McArdle, a Caledonia Country Club member and the son of 1999 Wellsville graduate and former St. Bonaventure men’s basketball manager Tim McArdle, earned John Forrest Most Outstanding Golfer honors, given to the player with the lowest scoring average for the summer (based on the best four out of five rounds). McArdle, after carding an 83 last Monday at Bartlett, secured that honor with a 75.75 scoring average – with rounds of 72 (at Wellsville), 74 (Pine Acres), 78 (Pennhills) and 79 (Elkdale).
Evan Maloney, meanwhile, was named the overall Division I (16-18 years old) champion by virtue of having the most total points. He helped secure that title by taking first at both the Pennhills and Pine Acres legs.
McArdle and Maloney tied for fourth and eighth, respectively, at Bartlett. Matt Beaver, of Cardinal Hills, earned his first individual Division I title of the season by shooting an impressive 2-over par 72, three clear of Kai Caskey (Bavarian Hills).
Kael Riekofsky, of Smethport Country Club, closed the year with his second Division II (14-15) victory of the season at Bartlett, notching an 85 to best runner-up Donovan Palumbo (Emporium) by five strokes. Riekofsky also secured the overall Division II points title with his performance.
Kaysen Beaver (Cardinal Hills) collected back-to-back wins in Division III (12-13), following up the 40 he shot at Pine Acres a week earlier with an impressive 39 at Bartlett. Beaver earned both the individual win and the overall divisional title with his effort. Gavin Blocher (Bartlett) was the Division III runner-up last Monday, posting a 44. In Division IV (11-and-under), with Keegan Smith, who’d claimed each of the first four legs, not in the field, the trophy was up for grabs, and Hudon Honeck (St. Bonaventure) took it, shooting a 37 from the modified tees to finish first, with Griffin Beaver (Cardinal Hills) second at 42. Smith was still named the division’s overall champion with his four individual triumphs.
Molly Burnett won the girls’ 18-hole Division I individual title – and the overall points championship – on her home course with a 113. With Alaina Hirliman’s four-week reign atop the girls nine-hole division due to absence, Peyton Truman (unattached) captured her first triumph with a 57. Hirliman still brought home the points title while Anna Bohdanowycz and Bailey Johnsen tied for second place at Bartlett with a 78.
“Thank you to Bartlett Country Club and to every host course, volunteer and parent who made the 57th Penn-York season happen,” tournament director Kyle Henzel said.
