ALLEGANY — Teams from eight area volunteer fire departments competed Thursday in water fights at Allegany Old Home Days.

Starting at 6 p.m.,19 different teams fought with fire hoses to move a beer keg hanging over North First Street in front of the Allegany Fire Department, the sponsor of Old Home Days.

New Hudson Fire Department from Allegany County took first place honors, with Eldred and Bolivar taking second and third.

Other participating fire departments were Cuba, Limestone, Hinsdale, Westons Mills and Richburg.

Firefighters tried to push the keg on pulley and wire line to the opponent’s end. The streams of water pushed the keg back and forth.

People watching the water fights from behind barricades often found themselves getting wet from the streams of water bouncing off the keg.

Orchestrating the water fights was Allegany Assistant Fire Chief Tim Hite. He signaled for teams to turn on their hoses and then lower them onto the keg. Water was switched off as soon as a team scored a point by pushing the keg to their opponent’s goal.

“This is the highlight of the first couple of days of Old Home Days,” Hite said. “Everyone seems to be happy it’s back.”

Tonight (Friday), the Kiddies Parade starts at 6 p.m. from the Post Office on North Fifth Street, marching to the fire hall where treats will be available for those participating. Lineup starts at 5:30.

The Grand Parade is set for 6 p.m. Saturday along East Main Street. Lineup starts at 5:30 on the street near St. Bonaventure Church. They will march to the fire hall.

Knox Great American Midway is providing amusement rides, games and food. The midway is open from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday and from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to midnight on Saturday. Wristbands for unlimited rides are $30 per session.

There will be bands both tonight and Saturday.
