PORTVILLE, NY — Through two innings of its game against Randolph, the Portville baseball team faced a 5-0 deficit.

The Cardinals, eventual 7-6 winners on the day, had jumped on the Panthers, bringing four across the plate in the very first frame.

However, behind a consistent effort through the middle innings, the hosts slowly dug out from the early hole they found themselves in.

Two runs apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings saw Portville take a late grasp on the contest. Unfortunately, after having been blanked for the prior four innings, Randolph was able to find a response, scoring twice and retaking a one-run lead in the top of the seventh.

The Panthers had a chance to win in dramatic fashion, having loaded with just one out, but the walk-off was not to be as two strikeouts stranded the game-winning run at second.

Portville tallied six hits on the day,  all coming from different batters. Parker Keim (1-for-4, run), Aidan DeFazio (1-for-3, run, walk) and Liam Taylor (0-for-2, run, walk) all recorded an RBI in the loss.

DeFazio picked up eight strikeouts in a complete game effort.

ST. MARY’S, PA — Despite connecting for 13 hits on the afternoon, the Port Allegany baseball team was unable to overcome difficulties on the mound as it suffered its first loss of the season.

Elk County Catholic scored all eight of its runs on just five hits as the Gators struggled to find the strike zone. Between the four pitchers they used over the course of the affair, they recorded just two Ks to 12 walks.

Offense was not an issue necessarily as the first five batters in the lineup for Port Allegany each had multiple hits. Leading the way was Kellen Veilleux, who went 3-for-4 with a run in the loss.

Aiden Bliss had a standout performance for the Gators as well, going 2-for-3 with three runs.
