THURSDAY ROUNDUP: Maine, Olean softball take down Dunkirk on the road; Port Allegany baseball improves to 8-0

DUNKIRK, NY – A six-run seventh frame proved to be the finishing touches on the Olean softball team’s blowout 16-3 win over Dunkirk as they picked up their fifth victory of the season.

At the plate, Amelia Jones led the Huskies, recording a game-high four hits during her five appearances and producing four runs and two more batted in. Ava Finch followed in suit with three hits in five trips to the plate, scoring three times and recording two RBIs while Anna Bates finished 2-for-5 with a team-high three RBIs and one run scored. Tiana Maine anchored the defense from the circle, pounding the zone for 13 strikeouts while allowing just four hits. 

Now sitting at 5-3, Olean will look to string together a third consecutive win as they travel to Randolph for a Saturday showing at 11 a.m.

Southwestern 8, Salamanca 5

JAMESTOWN, NY – Despite nearly doubling its hosts’ hit tally on the night, Salamanca fell to Southwestern.

The Warriors made a late push with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but were unable to complete the rally. Charli Ross was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Addy Earley was also 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

HS BASEBALL

Port Allegany 15, Smethport 0, 4 innings

PORT ALLEGANY, PA – An 11-run first inning laid the foundation for the Gators’ eighth consecutive win of the season as they completed the season sweep over Smethport.

Nick Wilfong was flawless at the plate throughout the win, coming away with three hits in three trips and recording three runs and three RBIs. Chase Boyd ended 2-for-3 with four RBIs and one run scored, followed by Gavin Moses’ 1-for-1 day which saw two RBIs and one runs scored. 

At 8-0, Port will next see Cameron County at home on Tuesday. That game, which is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start, will also be when the Gators honor their seniors.
