OLEAN — Democratic congressional candidate Aaron Gies of Olean announced Monday that he received the endorsement of Democratic committees in five counties in his bid for Congress from the 23rd District.
Gies was endorsed by the Cattaraugus County Democratic Committee on Sunday. Other counties endorsing him include: Erie, Niagara, Steuben and Tioga.
Gies, an assistant professor of Franciscan Studies at St. Bonaventure University and Erie County attorney Kevin Stocker are vying for the nomination to take on Rep. Nick Langworthy in November. Both have vowed to primary for the Democratic nomination.
Langworthy, seeking re-election to a third term, is facing a primary from James King of Owego.
Gies and King have held a bipartisan town hall together in East Aurora. They have another one scheduled 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ellicottville Town Center.
Gies said he appreciates the support from the five counties.
Cattaraugus County Democratic Party Chairwoman Mandy Bushnell said, “From the first time I spoke with Aaron, I felt he decided to run for the right reasons. He is the best candidate to be our district’s representative because he listens to all the people of our district and has the drive to work to make our area thrive and prosper.”
Cattaraugus County Democrats also endorsed Victoria Guite from Genesee County for the 57th State Senate seat held by Republican George Borrello of Chautauqua County.
“Across NY-23, families are asking for stability, affordability, and leadership that shows up and follows through,” Gies said in a statement. “This district deserves steady, responsible representation focused on the basics people depend on.”
Gies has repeatedly called out Langworthy for his refusal to conduct traditional town halls to meet with constituents and hear their concerns. Langworthy said he prefers his monthly telephone town hall format where he can reach more constituents.
“I appreciate the trust these committees have placed in our campaign,” Gies said. “More importantly, I appreciate what it represents. If you believe in strengthening those foundations here at home, please join us.” People are looking for “Dependable healthcare, stable jobs, safe homes and time with family,” he said.
Any primaries to determine the Democratic and Republican candidates will be held June 23.
