WEDNESDAY ROUNDUP: Port boys, girls pick up big Wednesday wins; Rodriguez scores 30 in Panthers win at home

BROCKWAY, PA – Playing on the second night of a back-to-back, the Port Allegany boy’s basketball team rode their momentum all the way to Brockway, emerging with a 40-33 victory as they look to secure their positioning for the District 9 Class A postseason. 

The weight of the Gators’ offense largely fell on the shoulders of Jarrod Funk and Isac Amell, who combined for 32 of their 40 points. Funk led all scorers with 17 points, also coming tallying eight rebounds and four blocks, while Amell finished with 15 points, six rebounds and one assist. 

Sitting at 14-5 with just three games left on the schedule, Port has all but locked up a playoff game at home. They finish out their schedule with a game on the road against Oswayo Valley on Friday before closing out the regular season with home games against Eisenhower on Monday and Northern Potter on Tuesday.

Johnsonburg 50, Bradford 45

JOHNSONBURG, PA – Falling behind early, the Owls were unable to spark a comeback as they fell on the road to the Rams. 

Jburg opened the night with a flurry of offense, with three Rams combining for their initial 16 points. Bradford, on the other hand, fell on the other side of the spectrum, scoring just three points through the first eight minutes. Despite outscoring Jburg 14-4 in the second, the Owls couldn’t hold onto the momentum entering the second half. 

Marcus Terwilliger led the Owls in scoring, finishing with 14 points while Tyler Simmons came away with 13 points four steals and three assists.

Port Allegany 54, Oswayo Valley 19

PORT ALLEGANY, PA – With three Lady Gators combining for 41 points, Port earned a blowout win over OV on Senior Night.

After celebrating their five seniors – Jenna Renner, Haylee Thomas, Madison Errick, Madison Fillhart and Brynn Evens, the Lady Gators burst out of the gates. Outscoring the Lady Green Wave by eight in the first quarter, Port doubled-down in the second, building a 18-point lead before entering halftime. From there, they cruised to the finish line, picking up their twelfth North Tier League win of the season. 

Evens led the Lady Gators throughout the win, tallying a double-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Fillhart followed closely behind with 13 points while Renner ended with 11 points, six rebounds, six steals and three blocks. Gordon came away with eight points, seven rebounds and four steals in the win.

SMETHPORT, PA – Taking to the road for the last time of the season, the Lady Terrors planted their flag in hostile territory one more time with a 14-point win over Smethport. 

Baylee Francis came away with a team-high 13 points alongside four rebounds and four assist, while Jahden Smith earned all her points from beyond the arc, hitting four 3-pointers for 12 points and also tallying three steals and three rebounds. Rayel Hakes pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds along with her nine points.

For the Lady Hubbers, Madey McKean registered a double-double, scoring a game-high 14 points and 10 rebounds while Payton Neff ended with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

BRADFORD, PA – Bucking their two-game losing streak, the Panthers returned to the win column behind Jeremy Rodriguez’s 30 points. 

Knocking down six triples throughout the win, Rodriguez also came away with four steals and three rebounds in the win while Xander Norris scored 17 points and Kaleb Pryor scored 15. 

Women’s Basketball

Alfred 85, Pitt-Bradford 59

ALFRED, NY – Three Panthers ended in double-digit scoring despite Pitt-Bradford tallying their 20th loss of the season. 

Dalayla Alexander led the team in scoring with 16 points, six rebounds and four steals, followed by Ella Gettings with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Amber Murak came away with 14 points and five assists.
