SALAMANCA, NY — The Salamanca boys basketball team, spurred on after suffering defeat in its season-opener, surged past Depew for a 58-30 win just two days later for its first victory of the campaign.

The center-point guard duo of Payton Bradley and Dominick Hill showed out, just like they did in their team’s first game of the year against Class AA Frontier. Both finished with 13 points against the Wildcats, but it was Carlton Farmer, making his return who dropped a game-high 16 points.

Farmer shot over 50% from the floor and drained four 3-pointers, pacing the Warriors. Cam Christiano led Depew with 10 points.

DuBois Central Catholic 39, Port Allegany 32

NORTH CLARION, PA – Playing in their lone game of the North Clarion Tip-Off Tournament, the Gators’ patchwork offense fell short of the victory line, suffering their second loss of the season.

Playing without their leading man, Jarrod Funk, the weight of Port’s offense fell on the shoulders of Chase Boyd. Although he would only score two points during the Gators’ slow first quarter, Boyd found his rhythm thereafter. Cashing in on two 3-pointers on his way to nine points in the quarter, he carried the Gators as they outscored the Cardinals 13-7 before the break. However, their heat streak didn’t translate to the second half.

As DCC regained their footing, the Cardinals would pull away for good in the third, outgunning Port 14-5. Boyd continued to carry the load, scoring all of the Gators’ second half points, but was unable to lift them over the hump.

Boyd ended with 24 points for Port during the loss, also coming away with four steals in the Gators’ second loss of the season.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Jamestown 73, Salamanca 53

JAMESTOWN, NY — A slow start condemned the Salamanca girls basketball team as it suffered a hefty loss to Jamestown on the road.

Makenzie Crouse led Salamanca with 14 points.

Payton Gibbs recorded a game-high 17 points for Jamestown.

“They were a step quicker than us today and presented a difficult press to break,” Salamanca coach Joe Hinman said. “Too many mistakes early got us in a hole. Despite the loss we will bounce back. It’s good to see teams like Jamestown early on in the season. It’ll give us time to prepare and get ready for some tough league games coming up.”

MENS BASKETBALL

Pitt-Greensburg 89, Pitt-Bradford 88

BRADFORD, PA — Suffering their first stretch of back-to-back losses of the season, the Panthers dropped to 0-2 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play with a down-to-the-wire contest against Pitt-Greensburg.

After seeing their early lead wiped away with a retaliatory burst from Pitt-Greensburg, the Panthers managed to take a slim four-point lead from a halftime buzzer-beater from Maki Hill 3-pointer. However, the dueling would continue after the break.

Pitt-Bradford again built up a cushion on the scoreboard, pulling away by as much as 10, but with ten minutes to go in the game, Greensburg began chipping away. A 10-2 run trimmed Pitt-Bradford’s advantage to a single point before Greensburg ultimately took a four-point lead with a flurry of shots with just 36 seconds left. Eventually bringing it back to a one-score game, the Panthers had one final shot for the win, a pull-up jumper from Jeremy Rodriguez. However, that shot failed to draw iron as the time expired, handing the Panthers their third loss of the season.

Hill led Pitt-Bradford with 15 points, also coming away with four rebounds and one assist. Niare Poplar posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, tallying two blocks and an assist while Rodgriuez ended with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

WOMENS BASKETBALL

Pitt-Greensburg 62, Pitt-Bradford 47

BRADFORD, PA — Another sluggish start gave way to an eighth consecutive loss at the Panthers entered conference play.

While Pitt-Bradford had their fair chances of looks at the basket, shots refused to fall. Shooting just 14.3 percent in the first quarter and 7.1 percent in the second, the Panthers quickly found themselves in a 31-14 hole heading into halftime. Although their offensive efficiency saw improvement in the third and fourth quarters, shooting 41.5 percent and 21.1 percent, Pitt-Bradford was already behind by too much to come back from. Outscoring Pitt-Greensburg 33-31 in the last two quarters, Pitt-Bradford dropped their first AMCC matchup of the year.

Two Panthers ended in double-digit scoring, with Amber Murak leading the way with 18, also tallying five rebounds in the loss. Dalayla Alexander finished with 17, collecting six rebounds and four steals along the way.
