OLEAN — After a brief shower that ended just as trick-or-treating started at 6 o’clock on Halloween night things were mostly smooth sailing in Olean.
Children in costumes and escorted by their parents, roamed neighborhoods for homes with welcoming porch lights — signaling they were giving out candy at the house.
Temperatures were in the mid-40s as darkness fell. Unlike other years there was no rainstorm or snowstorm here on Halloween. Many kids wore coats over their costumes to ward off the chill.
On Main Street, three-year-old Henry Howard, son of Derek and Aarah Howard walked up to the home of Jerry and Carolynne leFeber, where Mrs. leFeber waited with candy in both hands.
Henry picked one and his parents thanked Mrs. leFeber before walking on to the next house.
Both the leFebers indicated they enjoyed seeing the children in costumes each year and assured they had plenty of candy.

Gavin and Addie Blocher trick-or-treated with costumes that made it look like they were riding animals, with the parents watching nearby.
The scenes were repeated across the city.
Earlier in the day, the City of Olean had hosted a trick-or-treat event at the Municipal Building.
Olean Mayor Bill Aiello had urged extreme caution in driving Friday night because of all the trick-or-treaters. The Halloweeners were also urged to cross streets only at crosswalks or at intersections and to use care.
