Spurred in large part by the Olean mayoral race, more than 400 voters cast ballots in the first three days of early voting in Cattaraugus County.

Early voting started Saturday at two sites in the county: The Cutco Building on North Barry Street at the Olean Campus of Jamestown Community College and the Cattaraugus County Board of Election offices in the old Little Valley school on Rock City Street.

Olean Mayor Bill Aiello is waging an uphill battle for re-election to a fourth four-year term on the independent Lincoln Party Line against Olean businesswoman Amy Sherburne, who defeated Aiello in the Republican Primary and was endorsed by Democrats.

As of 2 p.m. Monday, the Board of Elections had recorded 390 votes between the Olean and Little Valley sites.

Saturday was very busy, said Democratic Election Commissioner Kevin Burleson. There were 175 voters cast in Olean (151 from the city of Olean) and 28 cast at Little Valley.

On Sunday, there were 95 early voters, 81 cast at Olean (62 from the city) and 14 in Little Valley.

As of 2 p.m,. Monday, there were 93 votes recorded. There were 77 votes cast in Olean (60 from the city) and 16 in Little Valley.

Burleson said the mayoral race between Aiello and Sherburne appeared to be driving the early voting in the City of Olean. Aiello lost the GOP primary where there was low voter turnout. He’s urging voters to return him to office to finish projects that he wants to see through, while Sherburne says it’s time for a change.

There is one contest for alderman in Ward 4, pitting incumbent Sonya McCall, Democrat and Working Families Party, and Alan Peters, Republican and Conservative candidate.

Ward 2 Alderman Joseph Keary is running on the Republican and Conservative lines. Democrat Rychelle Weseman is not actively campaigning.

Ward 6 Alderman Vernon Robinson Jr., the Democrat and Working Families candidate, who was recently elected council president, is unopposed, as is Ward 7 Alderman David Anastasia.

Early voting continues Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m. at 305 N. Barry St., Olean and 207 Rock City St., Little Valley.

The schedule for the rest of the week follows:

Wednesday, Oct. 29, noon to 8 p.m.

Thursday, Oct. 30, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 31, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 1, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 2, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Next Tuesday, Nov. 4, voting will be held at all 51 election districts in the county from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The only countywide offices on the ballot — district attorney and coroner, are unopposed.

County Attorney Ashley Smith is running unopposed on the Republican and Conservative lines to succeed District Attorney Lori P. Rieman, who did not seek re-election.

Kevin M. O’Rourke is unopposed on the Republican line for re-election as coroner.

In the City of Salamanca, City Court Judge Matthew Swenson is unopposed on the Democratic, Republican and Conservative lines.
