Tuesday Roundup: Lady Gators volleyball opens up with tightly-contested win; Bradford XC sweeps home opener

JOHNSONBURG, PA – Fighting tooth and nail, back and forth, the Port Allegany volleyball team was able to secure a win to start their season, beating Johnsonburg 3-2. 

From the very start, both teams battled for each point. The Lady Gators came away with a tightly-contested 27-25 win in set one before the Ramettes retaliated in set No. 2, 28-26. They again traded blows in the next two sets, with Johnsonburg stealing the third at 25-23 before Port came back with a 25-18 win to force the do-or-die duel. Playing to just 15, Port would earn a hard fought win, tallying a 15-7 victory that sealed the season opening success.

Isla Lehmier ran the offense for Port, dishing out 27 assists alongside 22 service points and two aces. Jenna Renner ended with 18 service points, 12 kills, six aces and 10 digs while Lilly Lehmier finished with 17 kills, 19 service points and 10 digs. 

DuBois 3, Bradford 0 

BRADFORD, PA – After earning their first win a day prior, the Lady Owls fell at the hands of DuBois, losing in a clean sweep, 25-10, 25-10 and 25-18.

Aliya Corignani finished with 14 assists while Hayley Keane guarded the net with four blocks alongside her eight kills. Addison Carter ended with four kills.

BRADFORD, PA – Kadyn Tessena stepped up for the Owls as he secured a season-opening win with a first place finish.

Tessena ended with a day’s best 18:37.69 while Jordan Hogue and Evan Troisi finished in sixth and seventh at 19:26 and 19:36, respectively. Nikolia Frontino (19:40) and Xavier Frontino (19:53) rounded out the Owls’ top ten finishers at eighth and ninth while Tony McDonald (20:31.5) and Miles Hawk (20:54) both had personal bests on their home course at 11th and 13th. 

In the middle school action, Charlie Vinelli won the race at a time of 9:24.58, finishing over one full second ahead of second place.
