OLEAN, NY — Both the Olean Oilers and the Hornell Steamer had relatively quiet nights at the plate, tallying just six hits apiece.
But it was what the latter did with those connections that made all the difference as the Oilers fell 3-0.
Austin Ellis led the way for the Steamers on offense, going 1-for-4 and tallying two crucial RBI in the fourth inning. However, the biggest difference maker in favor of the visitors was on the mound as Sebastian Ecker threw a walk-free complete game in which he struck out eight batters.
For Olean, six different batters recorded one hit apiece, combining for the team’s total. The biggest struggles came at the bottom of the order with the last four batters in the lineup going a combined 2-for-12.
On the bright side, the Oilers did manage to get over seven frames of work from starting pitcher Xander Gendics, who tallied three strikeouts and one walk in his outing.
