HORSEHEADS, NY – Heading out on the road to kick off another spree of games, the Olean Oilers were handily routed by the Horseheads Hitmen, losing 15-2 in seven innings.
The Oilers and the Hitmen initially faced each other on Friday, June 13 when Olean found a burst of energy late which produced a 6-2 win on the road. However, in their second meeting of the season, the Hitmen wasted no time building a lead.
Although the Oilers would find a pair of hits in the first, they were unable to put anyone past second, retiring back to the dugout in five. Horseheads, on the other hand, would break through early with a pair of singles, a wild pitch that moved their men into scoring position and back-to-back RBI-singles and three runs. The Hitmen would continue to oppress Olean over the next two frames before scoring five more runs in the third.
After five empty innings, the Oilers finally managed to get on the scoreboard in the sixth. Chase Fischer took the march to first via walk, then stealing his way to third. With two outs, Matthew Boffalo hit a shot into right field, bringing in Fischer while advancing Bryce Neely, who was also walked, to third. Neely would round home plate one batter later on an error by the Hitmen’s right fielder. However, their momentum was short lived as Horseheads countered with their biggest scoring burst of the evening, sealing the game with seven more scores.
Along with his RBI, Boffalo also ended with a pair of hits in three appearances. Alex Myers also nabbed two hits, albeit in four trips to the plate. Jaxson Ross started on the mound for Olean, throwing for three frames and coming away with four strikeouts.
The Oilers return to Bradner Stadium on Wednesday for a double-header rematch against the Salamanca Lizards. This past weekend, the Lizards and the Oilers faced off in the initial Allegheny River rivalry with Salamanca coming away with a clean sweep. The first pitch for Wednesday’s first game is slated for 5 p.m.
