MONDAY ROUNDUP: Salamanca Lizards swept in doubleheader as Salt Cats’ offense erupts

SYRACUSE — After taking both games of their doubleheader against the Olean Oilers the day before, the Salamanca Lizards were hoping to continue their winning ways.

Unfortunately for the visitors on the day, they were left with two more tallies in the loss column after their doubleheader against the Syracuse Salt Cats, the NYCBL’s reigning champions.

In the first game of the evening, the Lizards exchanged blows with the Salt Cats.

Salamanca opened the scoring in the top of the first frame courtesy of a run from Gabe Roth (2 runs, 2 walks), only to see that lead swiped away immediately as Syracuse responded with two runs in the bottom of the first.

The visitors were able to knot things back up with a run from Frank Kula (1-for-3, run, walk) in the third, but once again the hosts answered with a run of their own to keep their noses in front.

The sides also exchanged unproductive innings, both being sat down in order in the second and fourth innings.

But, after chasing the Salt Cats through the early innings, Salamanca’s moment to jump ahead arrived. Loading the bases via a walk and two hits with just one out on the board, the Lizards knocked out Syracuse’s starting pitcher Tha’Mon McGriff (5 SO , 4 BB). But the change in personnel on the mound did not save the Salt Cats as the Lizards brought three runs across to take a 5-3 lead.

But much to the dismay of Salamanca, Syracuse found yet another answer, and this time it would be the nail in the coffin. The Salt Cats scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth, reestablishing and building upon the buffer it had before the Lizards’ three-run surge.

Syracuse added an extra insurance run in the sixth, and without a response, Salamanca dropped the first affair of the day.

Unfortunately for the Lizards, the second game of the doubleheader would not be as close as the first.

After failing to score in the top of the first inning, Syracuse jumped on Salamanca’s starting pitcher, Collin Schneider, putting up five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first. And the score only continued to run away from the visitors. The Salt Cats brought across four more runs in the second and three more in the third, all while they kept the Lizards off the board.

Salamanca did manage to put a momentary stop to the bleeding in the fourth inning, but a grand slam in the fifth highlighted a six-run frame for the Salt Cats as their offense got right back to work after the pause.

The Lizards did manage to avoid the shutout by scoring a run in the top of the seventh inning, but it was too late for a dramatic rally as the Salt Cats secured the sweep.

Salamanca will play its fifth game in three days on June 24 away from home against the Dansville Gliders. First pitch for that affair is slated for 5 p.m.
