FALCONER — At the Section 6 track and field state qualifier, the Salamanca girls team saw nine athletes compete in 10 different events, totaling 12 entries altogether — a number that coach Laurie Lafferty-John noted has not been seen by the program “probably since the early 1990s.”
Highlighting the meet for the Warriors was Jamila Nelthrope who posted a :12.82 F.A.T (Federation Automatic Timing) time and took fourth in Class C/D in the 100m dash. The result was also good enough for a new school record by .02 seconds — a record, set by Kathy Carrol, that has stood since 1987.
Ryanna Brady had the Warriors’ highest placed finish, taking third in the 2,000m steeplechase (7:37.70). She also ran the 3,000m (11:15.10), taking fifth in the class. Brady, a senior, will finish her Salamanca track and field career second in the 3,000m, third in the 1,500m and tenth in the 800m all-time in program history.
Izabella Milks finished fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 32-11.5 and, clearing the 5-0 mark, placed sixth in the class in the high jump. She also took 16th in the 100m hurdles (:18.53).
Summer Downey took eighth overall in the 400m hurdles, setting a new PR in the process. Gabby Bly placed 10th in the 400m hurdles (1:15.74) and qualified for the 2,000m steeplechase, but was unable to finish due to an injury.
The 3,200m relay team of Lailee Pierce, Kaylin Lemon, Milks and Brady posted a time of 10:56.24, good for 10th overall. And finally, the 400m relay team of Rhiannin Chase, Downey, Leilene McComber and Nelthrope took eighth place.
