Tyler C. Heron, 77, of Salamanca, NY died Monday evening, May 26, 2025 at Buffalo General Hospital following a short illness.
Born June 28, 1947 in Salamanca, NY, he was the son of the late George D. Heron and June L. Lay Heron. He was married July 2, 1966 to the former Shirley “Chic” Crouse, who survives.
He was an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians and of the Deer Clan.
Tyler had been employed with the Ironworkers Local 6 for over 33 years, retiring in 2004. He was involved in the Seneca Nation government, serving on the Tribal Council from 1994 – 1998, was the active chairman of the 1365 Resettlement Council, and had served on various other nation committees.
He was a member of the Coldspring Longhouse and the Sons of the American Legion Hughes-Skiba Post 535. He coached the West End Warriors in the CCMFL for over 32 years. In addition to being a community pillar, he was an avid fan of the Salamanca Warriors, Gowanda Panthers, and Silver Creek Black Knights, always supporting “homeboys”. Tyler was a member of the former Black Knights Drum Corps, where he started at age 12, and was also a member of other local drum corps. He enjoyed sprint car races and golfing, and was an avid NY Yankees and Buffalo Bills fan. He also enjoyed going to the casino and playing on his favorite slot machine and will be remembered for his participation in family birthday parties. He succeeded his father and grandmother, George Heron and Florence Lay, in his leadership in community events with his famous Hull Corn Soup and Salt Brine Pickles.
Surviving besides his wife are: a daughter, Tracie (Kevin) Nephew, Lawtons, NY; a son Travis (Nicole) Heron, Salamanca, NY; three granddaughters, Alyson, Madison, Aubrie; three grandsons, Nick, Franklin, Tyson; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Gloria Heron, Salamanca, NY; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Daniel Heron and David Heron.
Friends may call at the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc Funeral Home, 25 River Street, Salamanca, NY on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m.
Longhouse services will be held in the funeral home on Thursday at 10 a.m. with Speakers from the Coldspring Longhouse officiating.
Burial will be in Hillside Haven Cemetery, Steamburg, NY.
