BOLIVAR — Two New York State troopers were stabbed Saturday afternoon while trying to subdue an unidentified woman outside Crosby’s store and gas station in Bolivar.
One of the troopers discharged his weapon, but it did not strike the woman.
In a bylined story by John Anderson in the online Wellsville Sun Saturday afternoon, a Troop A spokesman said the troopers had been taken to Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville.
State Police spokesman Trooper James O’Callahan told Anderson the troopers suffered “serious, but non life-threatening injuries.” He did not elaborate. The incident occurred about 3 p.m.
State police issued an updated press release later stating one trooper had been stabbed near the eye, while the other was stabbed in the head.
The trooper stabbed near the eye was stabilized and transported by medical helicopter to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. The other trooper was treated at Jones Memorial Hospital.
The woman, who was not identified, was transported to Olean General Hospital for injuries suffered in the fight with police near the gas pumps. There was no immediate report of what charges are being filed or why she was originally taken into custody.
Wellsville Regional News reported the woman was being investigated regarding an alleged theft of a vehicle in Wellsville. A witness said the woman had apparently been working at Crosby’s for the past month. Those reports could not be independently confirmed.
Allegany County dispatchers initially said one of the troopers had been shot and the other suffered facial injuries in the fight with the suspect.
A video of a portion of the fight shows two civilians coming to the aid of troopers trying to restrain the woman.
The Bureau of Criminal Investigation is assisting, and charges are pending, the Sun reported.
