September 8, 1923 – February 6, 2025
Allegany, NY Virginia M. Hemmerly, 101, a lifelong resident of Olean and formerly of North 15th Street, passed away Thursday (February 6, 2025) at Field of Dreams.
Born September 8, 1923, in Jamestown, she was the daughter of Frederick W. and Gertrude Schleyer Hemmerly. Virginia graduated from Olean High School in 1941. She proudly worked for the City of Olean and was secretary to former Mayor William O. Smith. Virginia loved people and being involved with them, and she enjoyed volunteering at Olean General Hospital for many years.
Virginia was a faithful member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. She cherished her time spent at lunch with the ladies at Red Hat Society, and loved playing bridge. A passionate sports fan, she enjoyed watching the New York Yankees and Buffalo Bills. Virginia also made special memories during trips with her beloved dog, Megan.
She held a special place in her heart for her best friend, Frances Neiler, who passed away on March 22, 2018. Together, they created countless cherished memories through their travels and evenings at Chautauqua Lake, filled with dinners and campfires.
Virginia is survived by her nieces, Suzanne Koppenhaver, Penny Hemmerly, and nephew, John Kuhn, and several great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Bernadine Kuhn, and brothers, Frederick W. Hemmerly, Jr., and Robert L. Hemmerly; her nieces, Joanne Diebler, Beth McFall, and nephews, William Hemmerly Jr., Michael Kuhn, & Larry Kuhn.
Friends will be received on Monday (February 10, 2025) from 11 am to 12 pm at the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home,3128 West State Road, Olean. A funeral service will begin at 12. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
