HOUGHTON, NY – The Salamanca girls’ track and field team returned home from the Section VI 9th and 10th Grade Championships with one in their ranks in freshman Jamila Nelthrope.

Running the 300 meter dash, Nelthrope finished in first place with a time of 0:43.79. She also took second place in the 55 meter dash at 0:7.69 and fifth in the pole vault at 6-9.

“She has that unique combination of speed and power and has tremendous potential to get to the next level,” said Salamanca head coach Laurie Lafferty-Jones. “She has the grit it requires to compete in this event because she refuses to give up and that is so exciting to watch only being a freshman.”

Kaylin Lemon had her best meet of the season in the 1500 meter dash. Competing as the only eighth grader in the event, Lemon posted a personal best time of 5:45.83, moving into the No. 2 spot in Salamanca’s Top Ten standings. She also ran a 0:34.18 in the 1,000 meter, placing eighth overall and improving her PR by over four seconds.

Kylynne Day had a stellar day in the throws, smashing her personal best in the shot put by over a foot, throwing 25-07. She placed fifth among all 10th graders in Section VI and also moved into No. 3 on Salamanca’s Top 10. Day also threw her best in the weighted throw with a 22-04.75 placing fourth overall in the 10th grade championships and now No. 5 in the teams Top 10.

Daisy Lichy ran close to her best time in the 300 meters (56.89) and Corey Day ran the 300 as well as a freshman improving her time by nine seconds (1:06.27). Corey Day has potential on the track, and we are looking to get her to embrace the training part of things.

The 4×200 Relay team of Jaelynn Cooper, Corey Day, Daisy Lichy and Lemon posted 2:25.44 which is the second best of our season. All the girls had personal best times in their 200 splits.
