PORTVILLE, NY – After trailing for the entirety of the game, a big fourth quarter lifted the Portville girls’ basketball team to a 30-20 win over Falconer, ending a four-game losing skid.

Through the first half, the Lady Panthers’ offense found little production. Starting slow, they would reach halftime with just four points in total. In the third, Portville managed to find their rhythm with Ava Jo Edwards hitting a few deep shots, but still faced a deficit on the scoreboard heading into the final eight minutes.

Then, with their backs against a wall, Portville locked in on both sides of the court. Allowing just four points, the Lady Panthers tacked on 18 of their own, sealing their sixth win of the season.

Edwards finished with a game-high 11 points while Ashley Carls had nine points alongside eight rebounds. Ali Haynes dominated on defense, recording eight steals and three blocks while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out a pair of assists.

“Ali Haynes did a great job getting touches on passes which led to her having a career high in steals,” said Portville head coach Inga Welty. “Ashley (Carls) played physical and did a wonderful job defending Falconer’s best player. She was aggressive on the offensive end and found a way to get herself to the line which was key in the last quarter. We are happy to get the win.”
