Weekend Roundup: Huskies hoops string four wins together; Lady Warriors track and field keeps rolling

Boys Basketball

OLEAN, NY – Three Huskies ended in double-digit figures as the Olean boys’ basketball team picked up their fourth win in a row, beating Dunkirk 61-49.

Coming into their Saturday matchup with a head full of steam, Olean got right to work as they built a 10-point advantage through the first eight minutes of play. From there, they would only build on their lead, ending their three-game home stretch with a win in front of their home fans.

Joe Mest and Luca Quinn led the charge for the Huskies, each scoring 15 points. Mykel Rivera followed closely behind with 14 points while Domonic Giovine had nine points.

Girls Indoor Track and Field

HOUGHTON, NY –  On Saturday, the Salamanca Girls finished the Varsity Select meet with one new school record, 12 personal bests, four additions to the Top 10 and two season best performances.

Senior Aubrey Domres broke two milestones by throwing over 30 feet in both the shot and weighted throw. She threw 30-11.5 in the shotput which is only a half inch off the school record held by Jillian Rae. She also placed seventh overall amongst over 50 teams. Her 30-10.5 in the weighted throw was a new school record. 

Ryanna Brady was third in the 3000 meters with a time only 0.6 seconds off her school record. 

Summer Downey had the best meet this year with two personal bests in the high jump 4-1 and in long jump 12-08.5 which moves her into No. 5 on the Top 10. Gabriella Bly moves into No. 2 on the Top 10 in the 600 running 1:55.94. 

Kylynne Day our rookie thrower moved into No. 7 in the weighted throw with an improvement over 1 feet 21-09.25 and also had a personal record in shot 23-11.

The 1600 Relay team of Kaylin Lemon, Izabella Milks, Downey and Bly are sitting in the No. 2 on our Top 10 after finishing at 4:48.10, just two seconds shy of the school record. 

Destiny Jimerson (55) Mary Chen (300) and Corey Day (600) posted personal bests while Boston Haley had a season best in the 1500 Mile walk. The 4 x 200 relay of Jimerson, C.Day, Chen and Ari Bluntt shaved six seconds off their time as well.

Boys Indoor Track and Field

HOUGHTON, NY — Of the 19 entries in the first select meet of the season, the Salamanca boys indoor track and field team saw 14 personal bests, a new school record and seven moves in the school’s top-10 list.

Preston Smith was the record-breaker on the day for the Warriors as his 11.59.2 time in the 3200m shattered the record he previously set in the event by 18 seconds.

“Preston is not allowing himself to be comfortable in these events,” Salamanca boys indoor track and field coach Michelle Hill said. “We have seen so much growth in him this season, and we know that he has even more to give.”

Payton Bigler moved into second on the all-time charts for the Warriors in the 1000m, shaving five seconds off his previous best. Aiden George also improved upon his best time in the 600m and moved into third on the all-time top-10 for the program in the event.

Denver Parsons set a PR in the 1600m by 23 seconds. George Parsons also set one in the 1000m by nearly four seconds.

In the 1600m relay, Remy Follman, Dakota Colts, George and Bigler moved into third on the program’s all-time list.

In the sprints, Follman set two PRs in both the 55m and 300m.

As for the field events, Jackson Oram (34-6.25) and Knox Johnson (29-8.5) both set PRs in the triple jump, improving upon their previous best distances by 6.25 and 8.5 inches respectively.

Brock Johnson improved upon his previous best in the shot put by over two feet and Evan Spruce improved by 0.25 inches in the weighted throw.

BOYS WRESTLING

Salamanca boys wrestling collects big win at Health Science Charter

BUFFALO, NY — The Salamanca boys wrestling team’s journey to Buffalo to face Health Sciences Charter was fruitful as it walked away with a big 51-6 win over the Falcons.

Everett Atwood and Kasen Hardy both secured wins via pin while Ryder Jimerson won with a 19-12 decision.

Noah Longley, Conner Seeley, Jack Merrill, Braeden Kyler, Kyle Oakes and Wyatt Bialaszewski each collected wins via forfeit.

Longley, Atwood, Donovan Terhune and Warrick John each won exhibition matches by way of pin as well.
