On Saturday, the Salamanca girls’ indoor track and field team traveled to Houghton University for the Section VI A/B Inter-Divisional Meet. Concluding their second meet of the season, the Lady Warriors ended with six new school records, five new Section VI Qualifications and 15 personal bests.

“We had three rookies today have their first experience with track and field,” said Salamanca head coach Michelle Hill. “To see them battle the nerves and come out with a smile on their face from the opportunity to challenge themselves is always a priceless gift as a coach.”

Jamila Nelthrope (freshman) set three school records today in the 55 meters (7.78), 300 meters (44.50) and cleared seven feet in the pole vault. The 55 and 300 times qualified for the Section VI championships as well.

“Millie is a very versatile athlete and we are trying some new things this season to see where she wants to specialize,” said Hill. “She has come a long way and has a very determined attitude and the ability to get to the next level as she continues to learn and grow with her techniques.”

In the field, Aubrey Domres showed up big time for the throws. She set a new school record in the weighted throw (29-08.25″) and had a personal record in the shot (29-04.5″), second all time and both qualified her for the Sectional champs.

Isabella Milks had a great day with triple jump leaping to 33-09.75 which set a new school record and also qualified her for sectional champs.

“Bella is just having a fun year,” said Hill. “I see her really enjoying the meets and her ability to just compete without all the nerves this season. It is serving her well.”

Summer Downey has been shifting gears in her events this season and she has focused in on the high jump today setting PR that puts her No. 3 in all time school history with a 4-0″.

“She has so much in her, we just need to work on the technique of turning before she clears the bar and I think we are going to see her continue to improve,” said Hill.

Gabriella Bly and Daisy Lichy both ran the 300 meters today posting PRs. Bly now sits at No. 4 (51.87) and Lichy at No. 8 (55.85) on the all time Top 10.

“We are just getting started with their conditioning and both of these girls have a tremendous combination of endurance and speed and along with Downey will be huge in our relay towards championships,” said Hill.

Freshman Paloma Haas posted two PRs in the throws. Weighted Throw (24-08.5) good enough to move into the No. 4 spot and shot was (21-05.25) and now sits at No. 7 in the top 10.

Rookie Kylynne Day threw the weighted shot today (19-03.25) good enough for No. 8 on our top 10 list.

Destiny Jimerson ran her first races on the track ever. We are so proud of her confidence she is developing in her own abilities. Her time in the 55 meters (10.04) now occupies the No. 9 in our Top 10.

“The success of this meet was a great way to go into winter break with,” said Hill.

Boys Track and Field

Salamanca – Sectional A/B Inter-Divisional Meet

Before the holiday vacation, the Salamanca boys’ indoor track and field team made the wintry trek to Houghton University for their A-B Divisional Track meet and they did not disappoint. The boys had 18 individual entries and would finish the meet with 14 personal records, one broken school record and two Sectional qualifying performances.

In the 55m dash, the Warriors had three rookies enter. Junior Brendon Ghani sprinted his way to a No. 5 spot on the school top ten, freshman Jayden Romero secured a No. 7 on the top ten and Kyle Dibble finished his first ever varsity event.

Freshman Knox Johnson had an incredible meet. He took off four seconds in his 600 m run and beat his triple jump best.

“He is definitely competing with a determined mindset this season,” said Salamanca head coach Michelle Hill.

Aiden George was only a half second from his best in the 1,000m run. Both Preston Smith and Darren Hayes ran their best in the mile. It was a great day in the 300m dash, both Dakota Colts and Remy Follman sprinted for personal bests. Junior Jesse Hill had a season PR, finishing in seventh out of 52 athletes and his time qualified him for the sectional meet.

“I was extremely proud of his decision to run in the 3200m relay in addition to his sprint events, in an attempt to add to this season’s training,” said Hill. “He and Colts have been an asset as leaders helping the sprint rookies.”

Evan Spruce had a huge day in the throws. He heaved the shot three feet further than his best, beating his own school record which was already an automatic Sectional qualification. He also had a three feet PR in weighted throw bumping him to the No. 2 spot on the school top ten. Sophomore Brock Johnson followed suit in the shot put, beating his best by nine inches.

“It was really an enjoyable meet to watch, not just because of all the improvements in performances but also seeing these young men support one another,” said Hill. “Some of that was witnessed through peer coaching, making sure rookies checked in properly, cheering each other on or just a simple pat on the back and a ‘nice job.’ They are a fantastic group of young men to coach.”
