Walter M. Makin, 87, of Bradford, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2024 at UPMC Hamot, Erie.
He was born on December 20, 1936 in Colver, a son of the late Merritt and Flora Burt Makin.
He attended Colver area schools and the Jamestown Community College.
On July 30, 1960 in the Mt. Union Church, Alverda, he married Margaret A. Dye, who survives.
He was a United States Navy veteran who served from April 26, 1955 until his honorable discharge on April 24, 1959.
He was employed by W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery from November 16, 1959 until his retirement on January 14, 1999. While employed by Case, Walter was a member of the AFL-CIO Lodge # 638 where he also served as the Union President for fifteen years.
He was a member of the West Branch Church as well as a church trustee. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and he also enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife of sixty-four years, Margaret Makin of Bradford, he is also survived by one daughter, Diane (Thomas Tati) Makin of Kingston, NY; one son, Brian (Stephanie) Makin of North East; one brother, James D. (Bonnie) Makin of Nicktown; one grandson, Joshua Makin of North East; one granddaughter, Elise Makin of North East; several nieces and nephews and his beloved cat Louann.
In addition to his parents; he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Carl Makin, Russell Makin and John Makin.
The family will receive friends at the Mascho Funeral Home, Inc., on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 from 12:00 to 2:00 PM with a memorial service to immediately follow at 2:00 PM in the funeral home with the Pastor Ernie Perry of the West Branch Global Methodist Church, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the United States Navy and the American Legion Post #108 after the funeral in the funeral home.
