NEWFANE, NY – Opening their postseason with a matchup against top-seeded Newfane, the Portville football team overcame a back-and-forth affair to take home a 34-21 victory in the Section VI Class C quarterfinals.

The Panthers entered the playoffs as the eight seed at 7-2. Despite being the underdogs, however, they didn’t wait to take their cues from Newfane. After a scoreless first quarter, Portville got on the scoreboard first with a touchdown from Maxx DeYoe. While Newfane would counter, a 93-yard pass from Eli Sleggs to Mekhi Muhyee would keep Portville on top going into the break.

Newfane would open up the third with two scores to take their first lead of the game at 21-14. However, Sleggs would call his own number from the one-yard line to put up six before DeYoe crashed in the endzone for the 2-point conversion to go up 22-21. Coming down to the fourth quarter, Portville dominated the late game, scoring two touchdowns from DeYoe and Sleggs to secure the win.

Sleggs ended with 118 passing yards on 5-for-9 completion. DeYoe recorded 188 rushing yards in the win, scoring twice along with Sleggs, who rushed for 57 yards. Breckham Hunt anchored the Panthers’ defense with a team-high five tackles.

Next, Portville will face Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton on the road next Friday at 7 p.m.
