Of Humphrey, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning. He was born on August 6, 1956, in Salamanca, New York. Jack led a remarkable life filled with dedication to public service, community leadership, and a passion for the outdoors.

Throughout his career, Jack served in various roles including special education teacher, Assistant District Attorney, Assistant to the NYS Attorney General, Assistant Cattaraugus County Public Defender, and Humphrey Town Justice. His commitment to justice and community extended beyond his professional roles. He was President of the Ellicottville Rotary Club, co-founder of Allegany Nordic, and Chairman of the Board of the Delaware YMCA, where he organized events such as the Turkey Trot for over two decades. An avid outdoorsman, Jack completed over 30 marathons, including the Boston Marathon, numerous triathlons, and several long-distance cycling trips, including a memorable cross-country journey at the age of 40. His adventurous spirit and love for nature were complemented by his deep spiritual practice. Jack studied Buddhism and was actively involved at the Olean Meditation Center, where he led meditations and book studies.

Jack had a profound love for music, regularly organizing and attending live performances. His vibrant spirit and enthusiasm for life touched everyone who knew him. He is survived by his partner Sue Wyss, children Ryan and Arlita (Ben), grandchildren Landon, Cyrus, and Cooper, siblings Will (Joan), Stella (Garth), and Mary, and beloved Humphrey community.

The family is hosting a Celebration of Life on July 13, from 1-4 pm at the Great Valley Fire Company, 6035 Depot St, Great Valley, NY (tie-dye is encouraged). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Olean Meditation Center. Jack’s legacy of service, adventure, and community spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know him. Arrangements are under the direction of Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 411 Rock City St., Little Valley, NY.
