October 23, 1935 – November 3, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald W. “Jerry” Olshefski, who departed this life on November 3, 2024. Born on October 23, 1935 to Walter and Stella (Chalk) Olshefski in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Jerry’s life was characterized by his strong sense of dedication, service, and a genuine commitment to his family, friends, and personal interests.

Jerry graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 1957, where he was an active participant in the ROTC program and a proud member of the men’s basketball team. His athleticism and determination shone during the team’s impressive run in the NIT tournament in 1956, an achievement he held dear throughout his life.

After graduation, Jerry began a distinguished career in the United States Army, eventually transitioning to the U.S. Army Reserve, where he retired as a lieutenant colonel after 31 years of service. His commitment to his country was a cornerstone of his life, and he inspired many with his strength, resilience, and dedication.

After his honorable discharge from active-duty service Jerry began a long career which lasted thirty plus years for the State of Pennsylvania; working in McKean County rehabilitating members of the community.

Outside of his professional achievements, Jerry was known for his deep passion for gardening, often spending hours tending to his plants while greeting passersby with a wave. He also had a keen appreciation for antiquing and the art of restoring old furniture, with his eye for detail and craftsmanship. He was a dedicated member of the Kiwanis Kapers, where he found great joy in his community involvement, and nurtured a lifelong love for the performing arts.

Jerry leaves behind his beloved wife, Helen (Larson) Olshefski, with whom he shared 54 years of love and companionship. He is survived by his daughters, Shannon (Dickson) O’Toole and Dana (Dickson) Green of Bradford PA. His grandchildren Casey O’Toole (wife Dr. Bethany O’Toole) of Shippenville, PA, Maigen (O’Toole) Phearsdorf (husband Lt. Colonel Adam Phearsdorf) of Howell, MI, and Rachael Huff of Bradford, PA. He also took immense pride in being a great-grandfather to Brayden, Anna, Emily, Abel, and Adalie. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Stella (Chalk) Olshefski; infant sister Roberta; and his younger sister Christine (Olshefski) Conners.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that those wishing to honor Jerry’s memory make a donation to a charity of their choice.

A private funeral service will be held, with only immediate family in attendance, as they gather to remember and celebrate his life. The family is deeply grateful for the love, support, and understanding of friends during this time of loss.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Mascho Funeral Home, Inc.
